Volkmann and Konrad Place Fourth at NCAA Wrestling Championships
3/20/2004 12:00:00 AM | Athletics
Against third-seeded Matt King of Edinboro in the third-place match at 165, Volkmann fell behind early on a first-period takedown just over a minute into the match. After gaining the escape to pull within one, Volkmann took the lead in the second period with his takedown with less than 30 seconds to go. King pulled to within 4-3 with an escape early in the third period and the match went down to the wire. With less than 20 seconds to go, King got a hold of Volkmann's left leg and drove him to the ground for the two-point takedown. King rode the period out to claim third place with a 5-4 decision.
In a rematch of the Big Ten Championship at 165 pounds, Volkmann handed 10th-seeded Johnny Clark of Ohio State another defeat by major decision by the score of 13-0 in the consolation semifinals. Volkmann scored the early takedown and added back points in the second period. He had nearly five minutes of riding time to advance to the third-place match.
A native of Henning, Minn., Volkmann finishes his collegiate career as a three-time All-American and is in a tie for seventh place all-time in career wins with a 127-36 career record. Volkmann won his first Big Ten Championship two weeks ago in Columbus, Ohio.
Konrad faced fourth-seeded Leonce Crump for third place in a rematch of the quarterfinal matchup claimed by Crump. Crump scored early on a takedown in the first minute and rode Konrad for the remainder of the period. Konrad pulled to within one in the second on an escape, but needed a takedown in the third to win the match. Crump held the Golden Gopher at bay in the third and put the bout away with a takedown in the final 30 seconds to claim third with a 4-2 decision.
Konrad advanced to the third place match with a 5-3 upset of No. 3 Matt Feast of Pennsylvania. Leading 3-2 in the third, Konrad scored the takedown with 30 seconds to go in the match and held on for the decision. Konrad avenged an earlier loss to Feast at the National Duals.
Konrad finishes his first collegiate season with a 38-10 record, the highest win total by a Minnesota heavyweight in school history. The native of Freedom, Wis., earned All-American honors for the first time.
The NCAA Championships conclude tonight with the title matches. Senior Damion Hahn is seeking his second straight national title and will face No. 10 Ryan Fulsaas of Iowa at 197 pounds. The session starts at 5:30 p.m. Central and will be aired live on ESPN2.
