Hahn Wins Second Straight NCAA Championship

3/21/2004 12:00:00 AM | Athletics

Minnesota Senior Damion Hahn became Minnesota's third two-time NCAA Champion with a 7-2 decision against 10th-seeded Ryan Fulsaas of Iowa at the NCAA Wrestling Championships in St. Louis, Mo. Hahn joins Vern Gagne and Tim Hartung as the school's two-time national champions.

As a team, the University of Minnesota finished in eighth place with 65.5 points. Oklahoma State claimed its second-straight NCAA Championship with 123.5 points, 41.5 more than second-place Iowa which had 82.0. Lehigh and Ohio State tied for third place with 77.5 points. Minnesota finished with three All-Americans in Hahn, Jac ob Volkmann and Cole Konrad.

In the championship at 197 pounds, Hahn jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a takedown at the 1:21 mark of the first period. He rode Fulsaas for the rest of the period to earn 1:39 in advantage time. Hahn started down to start the second and increased his lead to 3-0 with an escape 40 seconds into the period. Fulsaas made things interesting in the third period. He scored the takedown with 1:21 to go in the match to make it 3-2. Hahn put the lead back to two with the escape, but Fulsaas appeared to have the momentum. A timeout for blood was called after Hahn was cut on the top of his head. When action resumed, Hahn got a hold of Fulsaas' leg near the edge of the match and pulled him back towards the center. Hahn got on top to score the takedown to put the match away with less than 30 seconds to go. He earned an additional point for riding time in the 7-2 decision.

"I think the only difference this year is I was expected to win," Hahn said. "Last year, I knew I could win the title, even though I wasn't the favorite. I knew going in that this match would be a street fight so that's how I wrestled."

Hahn finishes his career as the school's fourth four-time All-American, joining Chad Kraft, Jared Lawrence and Luke Becker. He is the first wrestler in school history to be a two-time national champion and four-time All-American. Hahn finished his career with a 118-21 record for an .849 winning percentage, a total that ranks ninth in school history. His 33-1 record this season is the fourth-best in terms of winning percentage in school history, while his season-ending 27-match winning streak is the sixth-longest in the history of the program.

"To be mentioned in the same breath with (Vern) Gagne and (Tim) Hartung is a great honor," Hahn said. "But at the same time, I know I won't be the last."

Earlier in the day, Volkmann took fourth place at 165 pounds, while Konrad claimed fourth at heavyweight. Volkmann finished his career as a three-time All-American and ranked seventh in school history in career wins with 127. Konrad earned his first All-American citation and with a 38-10 record, finished with more wins in a single-season than any other heavyweight in school history.

The Golden Gophers conclude their 2003-04 season with a 12-6 overall record, a runner-up finish at the Big Ten Championships and an eighth-place finish at NCAAs. Minnesota closed out its regular season with a 17-16 victory in Stillwater, Okla., against top-ranked Oklahoma State. The Golden Gophers lose seniors Hahn and Volkmann, but will welcome the nation's top recruiting class which redshirted this season.
