NCAA Championships Underway for Gopher Men's Swimming

The Gophers started strong earning a spot in the finals competition this evening after an eighth place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. This impressive finish earned the team of Terry Silkaitis, Ales Volcansek, Neil Osten, and Igor Cerensek first team All-American honors. They clocked a time of 1:27.99.
In the 400 freestyle, sophomore Travis Beckerle captured a 26th place finish with a time of 3:50.40. Teammate Zach Wood, 47th, finished the tight race in 3:57.81.
Sophomore Adam Mitchell led the Gophers in the 200 IM, accomplishing a personal goal of making the finals competition, with an eighth place finish. This earns Mitchell first team All-American honors. He finished in a time of 1:58.57. Ryan Plummer (2:00.78) and Diego Urreta (2:01.41) also participated in this event finishing in 26th and 36th places, respectively.
Five swimmers represented the Gophers in the 50 freestyle, led by Volcansek's 23rd place finish (22.30). Silkaitis finished in 30th place (22.38) and freshman Mario Delac in 34th (22.42). Teammates Cerensek (22.51) and Osten (23.08) placed 40th and 51st, respectively.
The 400 medley relay left the Gophers just shy of an appearance in the consolation finals finishing in 17th place. The team of Mitchell, Osten, Sean Kelly, and Delac earned a time of 3:38.60.
The Gophers were not represented in today's diving competition. Competition resumes tonight at 6 p.m. CT and continues through Saturday.
