coUniversity of Minnesota men's basketball freshman Kris Humphries was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year today by both the coaches and media after becoming the first freshman in Big Ten history to lead the league in both scoring and rebounding. Humphries was also named First Team All-Big Ten on both ballots.

He edged Big Ten Player of the Year Devin Harris of Wisconsin to capture the scoring title in the final game of the regular season to average 21.0 points per game and led all players with 9.5 rebounds per game in League play. Humphries became just the sixth player in League annals to lead in both categories and the first since Purdue's Glenn Robinson accomplished the feat as a sophomore in 1994. The 6-9 forward is the second Gopher to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Year in three seasons. Rick Rickert became the first Gopher to earn the award in 2002.

Humphries joined Harris, Paul Davis of Michigan State, Deron Williams of Illinois and Jitim Young of Northwestern on the coaches and media's first team. Humphries was also a member of the All-Freshman Team along with Dion Harris and Courtney Sims of Michigan, Shannon Brown of Michigan State and Marlon Smith of Penn State.
