4/8/2004 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball

yearUniversity of Minnesota men's basketball freshman Kris Humphries announced today he will enter the 2004 NBA Draft. This year's Big Ten Freshman of the Year and First Team All-Big Ten selection became the first freshman in Big Ten history to lead the league in both scoring and rebounding.

He edged Big Ten Player of the Year Devin Harris of Wisconsin to capture the scoring title in the final game of the regular season to average 21.0 points per game and led all players with 9.5 rebounds per game in League play. Humphries became just the sixth player in League annals to lead in both categories and the first since Purdue's Glenn Robinson accomplished the feat as a sophomore in 1994. The 6-9 forward is the second Gopher to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Year in three seasons. Rick Rickert became the first Gopher to earn the award in 2002.

This is the third Golden Gopher to leave early for the NBA since Dan Monson took over the program. Only Michigan State in the Big Ten has had more early entries (four) in the last five years. A complete list follows:

2000 -- Jamal Crawford - Michigan; Joel Przybilla, Minnesota; Michael Redd - Ohio State.
2001 -- Kirk Haston, Indiana; Rob Griffin, Iowa; Zach Randolph, Michigan State; Jason Richardson, Michigan State.
