Angela Buergis Ousted in First Round of NCAA Singles Championships

thUniversity of Minnesota senior women's tennis player Angela Buergis (Frauenfeld, Switzerland) lost in the first round of the 2004 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles Championships today at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. Buergis, ranked 70th in the nation, fell to No. 29 Karin Coetzee of Wake Forest, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. The match was the longest contest of the today's morning session at nearly two hours.

Buergis became the fourth Minnesota women's tennis player to compete in the NCAA Singles Championships and the first since Nora Sauska in 1997. No Golden Gopher has advanced past the first round in the singles championships.

Buergis was selected to the national tournament as one three at-large qualifiers from the Midwest Region. A 2004 All-Big Ten selection, she finished the 2003-04 season with a 17-11 overall singles record and a 15-6 mark in dual matches. Minnesota's top player in singles and doubles, Buergis compiled a 7-3 record in Big Ten singles matches to lead the Golden Gophers. During the season, she defeated the 34th-, 38th- and 57th-ranked singles players in the country. Buergis teamed with sophomore Nischela Reddy for the majority of the season at No. 1 doubles, posting a 21-15 overall record, a 9-11 dual mark and a 3-5 record in Big Ten action.
