Baseball Defeats Hamline 16-2

opponentTen different players drove in runs for the Minnesota baseball team (27-16) as it defeated Hamline (14-20) 16-2 on Tuesday, May 4 at SiebertField. The Golden Gophers have now outscored their opponents 53-7 in their past three midweek games.

Minnesota got things started with two runs in the bottom of the first inning to go up 2-0. Andy Hunter (West St. Paul, Minn.) had an RBI single to put the Golden Gophers ahead 1-0. Kevin Carlson (Edina, Minn.) doubled home Hunter to push the lead to 2-0.

Hamline cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the second inning on an Isaac Tyroler RBI single. Minnesota came right back with four runs in the bottom of the second inning to go up 6-1. Sam Steidl (Alexandria, Minn.) started the scoring with an RBI single to push the lead to 3- 1. Two batters, later, Matt Fornasiere (Maple Grove, Minn.) singled to bring home two runs to push the lead to 5-1. Mike Mee (Richfield, Minn.) had an RBI single to push the lead to 6-1.

The Golden Gophers scored a single run in the bottom of the fourth to go up 7-1. Minnesota extended the lead to 11-1 with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Hamline scored a single run in the top of the sixth to make it 11-2, but Minnesota answered with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 15-2. The Golden Gophers tacked on one run in the eighth for the final 16-2 margin.

Steidl paced the offense going three-for-four with two runs and two RBI. John Arlt (Lakeville, Minn.) went one-for-three and became the fourth Minnesota player to score four runs in a game this season. Matt Fornasiere (Maple Grove, Minn.) was also two- for three with two RBI, while David Hrncirik (Madison, Wis.) was two-for-four with three runs.

Dan Thompson (Sun Prairie, Wis.) and Hunter also had two RBI, while Kevin Carlson tallied two hits in the game. Luke MacLean (Bloomington, Minn.) scored two runs in the game for Minnesota.

Josh Krogman (St. Cloud, Minn.) started and picked up the win, going four innings, giving up four runs, one run and striking out two batters. Krogman moves to 2-1 on the season. Matt Loberg (Anoka, Minn.) pitched two scoreless innings of relief, while Jonathon Holt (Mondovi, Wis.) finished the game with a scoreless inning of relief in the ninth inning.

Jesse Maistrovich started and gave up two runs one inning to take the loss for Hamline.

Jason Juntunen led the way for Hamline going two-for-three with one RBI.

Minnesota will resume Big Ten play when it hosts Iowa on May 7-9. The first game will be on Friday, May 7 at 6:30 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, May 8 at 2 p.m. and a single game on Sunday, May 9 at 1 p.m.
