Angela Buergis Earns Berth to NCAA Singles Championships

fUniversity of Minnesota senior women's tennis player Angela Buergis (Frauenfeld, Switzerland) has earned one of 64 berths for the 2004 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles Championships. Buergis was selected to the national tournament as one three at-large qualifiers from the Midwest Region. The singles and doubles championships will be held May 24-29 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

Buergis, a 2004 All-Big Ten selection, is currently ranked 70th in the nation in singles with a 17-10 overall record and a 15-6 mark in dual matches. Minnesota's top player in singles and doubles, Buergis compiled a 7-3 record in Big Ten singles matches to lead the Golden Gophers. During the season, she defeated the 34th-, 38th- and 57th-ranked singles players in the country. Two of her three losses in the Big Ten came to the third- and 75th-ranked players. Buergis teamed with sophomore Nischela Reddy for the majority of the season at No. 1 doubles, posting a 21-15 overall record, a 9-11 dual mark and a 3-5 record in Big Ten action.
