The newly-hired coaching staff of the Golden Gopher women's soccer team has wasted little time in putting their stamp on the program. From signing a pair of impact transfers, along with a stellar recruiting class, Mikki Denney Wright and her staff have also focused on reaching out to the soccer community in the state of Minnesota.

Following an impressive spring performance by the Golden Gophers, Denney Wright, along with her assistants Kate Cortis and Brandon Barkus, turned their attention to building relationships with soccer clubs throughout the area.

"It is a goal of our coaching staff to develop strong relationships with the soccer community here in Minnesota," Denney Wright said. "Our coaching staff spent the month of May building those relationships. We have fantastic soccer throughout the state, and we want to be involved in the development of soccer in Minnesota."

The Golden Gopher coaching staff visited 14 soccer clubs throughout Minnesota, providing free clinics for players and coaches, serving as guest lecturers and meeting with coaching directors.

Overall in the month of May, Minnesota Soccer worked with over 600 youth soccer players in the area, and over 200 coaches. The coaching staff visited the following organizations: Bloomington Soccer Club, St Croix Soccer Club, White Bear Soccer Club, Plymouth Soccer Club, Burnsville Soccer Club, Wings Soccer Club, Coon Rapids Soccer Club, Woodbury Soccer Club, North Branch Soccer Club, St Anthony Soccer Club, and NSSA Soccer Club.

The coaching staff also provided a free clinic for the MWSL (Minnesota Women's Soccer League) and met with representatives from both the MYSA (Minnesota Youth Soccer Association) and the MSHSSCA (Minnesota Soccer High School Soccer Coaches Association).

"It is a priority of our coaching staff to become an important part of the soccer community in the state, and to recruit the best players from the state to the University of Minnesota," Denney Wright commented. "Our relationship with the Minnesota soccer community is important to our success."

Denney Wright became the third head coach in the history of the Golden Gopher program in January. A native of Omaha, Neb., Denney Wright was a three-year letterwinner for Minnesota from 1994-96.
