"Becoming a head coach is something I've always wanted and I'm very appreciative for the chance to do this at a Big Ten program with such a bright future," said Bingle. "I have a great deal of respect for Coach Wilson and am thankful for this opportunity."
"Matt is one of the best sprints, hurdles, jumps coaches in the country and this promotion will assure that he is with us for a long time to come," said Wilson.
Bingle has already made a mark on the Golden Gopher program. In 2003, he coached triple jumper Shani Marks to indoor and outdoor All-America honors and also guided the Gopher 4x400-meter relay to the Big Ten indoor title. The relay title was the first relay conference crown in Minnesota track history. This season, he directed redshirt freshman Jacenta Spandl to a runner-up finish in the heptathlon at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships.
Bingle, a Fulton, Ind., native, spent five years (1997-2002) at Eastern Michigan as an assistant coach of both the women's cross country and track & field teams. He was the head recruiting coordinator of the programs and oversaw meet management. During his tenure at Eastern Michigan, Bingle helped the Eagles to the 2000 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field title, as well as four other conference runner-up finishes. He coached 16 athletes to Mid-American titles and 83 athletes to all-conference acclaim.
Prior to accepting the position at Eastern Michigan, Bingle spent one season (1997) as an assistant men's and women's coach for cross country and track & field at California-Irvine.
Bingle entered the coaching ranks at Northern Arizona, where he served as the men's and women's graduate assistant coach for cross country and track from 1995-97. In his first season at NAU, Bingle helped the Lumberjacks to a runner-up finish at the 1995 NCAA Men's Cross Country Championships. He coached 13 Northern Arizona athletes to All-America honors and helped direct the NAU track programs to three Big Sky Conference titles. Bingle earned a master's degree in educational leadership from Northern Arizona in 1997.
Bingle attended Ball State and began his collegiate track career as a walk-on decathlete on the Cardinal team. He went on to earn a scholarship and become a two-time All-Mid-American Conference hurdler. Bingle was named the team's most valuable runner and team captain as a senior. He graduated from Ball State in 1995.
Bingle owns a USATF Level II Certification and served as the assistant technical manager of the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in 1995-97. He is also a veteran of several cross country and track & field camps and clinics.
