Roche Named a CRCA Second Team All-American

theCMinnesota senior rower Melissa Roche was named as asecond-team All-America selection, announced today by theCollegiate Rowing Coaches Association. It is the third straightseason that Roche has been named an All-Big Ten, All-Regionand All-America selection.

Roche rowed in every Varsity Eight race for the Golden Gophersin both the fall and spring seasons in 2003-04. As a member ofthe First Varsity Eight, Roche aided the Gophers to a 22nd-placefinish at the prestigious Head of the Charles regatta and a win atthe Head of the Iowa. Minnesota then opened the spring seasonwith wins over Louisville and Iowa. The Gophers finished theregular season with a home dual win over Kansas and SMU toearn Big Ten Boat of the Week honors. Roche and Minnesotafinished fifth at the Big Ten Championships with 78 team points.Roche was named a first team All-Big Ten selection in thechampionships. The Gophers finished eighth overall in theLexus South/Central Regional Sprints and sixth overall in theregion.

The All-America award is designed to recognize the outstandingaccomplishments of female rowers and coxswains during thecurrent season. The criteria include meeting eligibility rules asdefined by the athlete's institution, participating in at least 75percent of the season's races in the varsity boat, and thestudent-athlete's Head Coach must be a member in goodstanding of the CRCA. The All-America first and second teamswere selected by the regional chairpersons following the NCAAChampionships from the rowers who had received All-Regionfirst team honors.

Of the first and second team All-Americans, eight wererepresentatives from Big Ten institutions. Ohio State garneredthree All-Americans, while Big Ten champion Michigan had two.Along with Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan State each hadone All-American.
