Minnesota Finishes 20th in Final NACDA Directors' Cup Standings
6/30/2004 12:00:00 AM | Athletics
The United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between NACDA and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports - 10 women's and 10 men's. Each national champion receives 100 points.
Stanford captured the Directors' Cup for the 10th consecutive year. The Cardinal tallied 1,337.25 points, surpassing runner-up Michigan by 111 points. Stanford collected national titles in men's and women's cross country and women's tennis. UCLA (1,178.75), Ohio State (1,026.5) and Georgia (1,005.25) round out the top five.
The Golden Gophers were spearheaded by NCAA Final Four appearances by the women's volleyball and women's basketball teams. Both of those squads earned Minnesota 83 points in the Directors' Cup rankings. Top 10 NCAA finishes by the Maroon and Gold in men's gymnastics, men's hockey, men's swimming & diving and wrestling also helped lead Minnesota into the top 20 in the final standings. Minnesota's national championship in women's hockey was not counted toward the school's total due to the number of schools in the sport's championship bracket (four). For the second consecutive year, NACDA decided not to include sports that did not have a minimum of 12 teams in the NCAA Championships bracket.
Minnesota earned points in 14 sports: men's cross country, football, volleyball, women's basketball, men's and women's gymnastics, men's hockey, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's indoor track & field, wrestling, men's golf, men's tennis and baseball.
