Lindsey Berg Named to USA Olympic Women's Volleyball Team

aLindsey Berg was chosen as part of the 12-member squad to represent the USA Women's Volleyball team at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece according to an announcement made by USA Vollyeball. The 12 athletes will compete in the Olympics pending certification by the U.S. Olympic Committee.

Berg becomes the first player from the Minnesota volleyball program to make the U.S. Olympic team.

As a four-year starting setter for Minnesota from 1998-2001, Berg amassed 5,913 assists, which was good for third on the Minnesota and Big Ten career list. Berg is also second on the Minnesota career list in service aces at 283 and ninth in digs at 1,047.

Berg helped lead Minnesota to a pair of Big Ten second place finishes and NCAA Regional appearances in 1999 and 2000. In 2000, she helped lead the Golden Gophers to their highest winning percentage in school history at .882 (30-4).

Berg joins Robyn Ah Mow-Santos as one of two setters on the U.S. Olympic squad. Berg and Mow-Santos are also both from Honolulu, Hawai'i. Wiz Bachman, Heather Bown, Danielle Scott, Tara Cross-Battle, Ogonna Nnamani, Keba Phillips, Logan Tom, Tayyiba Haneef, Nancy Metcalf and Stacy Sykora make up the other 10 members of the team.

Bachman, Berg, Metcalf and Nnamani will all be making their first Olympic appearances in Greece.

For the women's Olympic indoor volleyball competition, which starts on Aug. 14, the 12 qualified teams are split into two pools. Pool A is made up of Brazil, Greece, Italy, Japan, Kenya and Korea, while Pool B consists of China, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Germany, Russia and the USA.

The USA women will play top-ranked China to begin pool play on Aug. 14. The women will then play Germany (Aug. 16), the Dominican Republic (Aug. 18), 2000 silver medallist Russian (Aug. 20) and three-time defending gold medalist Cuba (Aug. 22) to wrap-up pool play.

Under the guidance of fourth-year head coach Toshi Yoshida, the United States ranked No. 2 in the world going into the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Team USA is currently competing at the World Grand Prix in Asia.
