Four Golden Gopher Gymnasts Earn Scholastic All-America Honors

seniFour members of the 2004 Minnesota women's gymnastics squad earned Scholastic All-America honors from the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches for Women. Minnesota's honorees are seniors Carrie Hortsch, Alicia Opsahl, and Mary Skokut, and sophomore Kelly Stout. To earn the recognition, a gymnast must keep at least a 3.5 grade point average.

Mary Skokut is a four-time Scholastic All-American, and earned a bachelor's degree with honors in child psychology from the University of Minnesota this spring. Skokut maintained a 3.92 career grade point average. She was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten award winner, and was a Minnesota Top Five honoree in both her junior and senior years. As a senior, she was an Academic All-District award winner, as voted by the College Sports Information Directors of America. She finished her collegiate gymnastics career as one of the top student- athletes in program history. Skokut is one of three Gopher gymnasts to earn All-Big Ten honors in four seasons. She holds school records in two events, with a 9.975 on the uneven bars and the balance beam. Skokut has received an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, and will pursue a doctorate degree in child psychology.

Alicia Opsahl is a two-time Scholastic All-America honoree, and is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten award winner. She was a first-team All- Big Ten honoree as a senior, and ranks among Minnesota's all-time top ten performers on three events. She has kept a 3.70 grade point average during her college career. Opsahl is working to complete her degree in family social science at the University of Minnesota, and will serve as a student assistant coach for the upcoming season.

Carrie Hortsch, a team captain in 2004, is making her first appearance on the Scholastic All-America team. Hortsch has maintained a 3.75 grade point average while at the University of Minnesota, and is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten award winner. Hortsch struggled with injuries throughout her four- year career, and missed six meets during her senior season. She scored a career-high 9.90 on the vault in 2004. Hortsch will serve as a student assistant coach for the upcoming season while she completes her degree in communications.

Kelly Stout, a history major, earned her first Scholastic All- America award, and was an Academic All-Big Ten honoree in 2004. She boasts a 3.86 grade point average during her collegiate career. Stout competed as a vault specialist in 2004 and has a career-high score of 9.725.

As a team, Minnesota has an average GPA of 3.31, and ranks among the top in the nation.
