GeJunior libero Paula Gentil (Forteleaza Ceara', Brazil) was named Big Ten Volleyball Player of the Week for Monday, Aug. 30. Gentil becomes the third player on Minnesota's current roster to claim the honor in her career, joining Lindsey Taatjes (Prinsburg, Minn.), who has received it three times and Erin Martin (Ames, Iowa) who won it on Oct. 6, 2003.

Gentil broke her own school record for most digs in a match with 37 against No. 1 USC on Aug. 28 in the championship of the NACWAA Classic. She also had two service aces and two assists in that match. Minnesota lost in five games to USC, who extended a 49-match winning streak with the victory. It was only the second time during that streak that a team took the Women of Troy to five games, and the first time anyone led 2-1. Gentil also had 23 digs, five assists and a career-high four service aces in a four-game victory over No. 11 Colorado State, who hosted the tournament, on Aug. 27.

In the tournament, Gentil averaged 6.67 dpg, 0.78 apg and 0.67 sapg. For her efforts she was named to the NACWAA Classic All-Tournament with Martin. Gentil also received NACWAA Classic All-Tournament honors in 2002 when Minnesota hosted the tournament.

Gentil enters the week with 1,290 career digs, which is just one dig short of the school record held by Sharon Oesterling (1986-89). She is also just 103 digs away from entering the Big Ten top-10 career list in just her junior season.

Minnesota is back in action on Friday, Sept. 3 when it takes on Texas-San Antonio at 1 p.m. (CT), and Idaho State at 8 p.m. (CT) in the Wyoming Tournament. The Golden Gophers will also take on host Wyoming on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 8 p.m.
