The Golden Gopher soccer team (3-1) defeated Boise State, 3-0, in the Soccer Etc. Nike Classic in Boise, Idaho, on Friday night. Junior goalkeeper Molly Schneider earned her third shutout in four starts with two saves. A transfer from the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee, Schneider's three shutouts are one more than Minnesota had during the entire 2003 season.
Minnesota broke a scoreless tie with three goals in the second half. Sophomore Haley Lentsch scored from Kaitlin Neary to put the Golden Gophers up 1-0 in the 46th minute. Neary then scored from freshman Allison Kempainen to put Minnesota up 2-0 in the 62nd minute. Neary's shot from 25 yards out sailed over goalkeeper Kim Parker. It was the first career point for Kempainen who was playing in her first match.
Fellow freshman Amelia Kasten rounded out the scoring at 88: 41 with her first career goal. Off of a free kick, Kasten's shot ricocheted off the goal post and past the goalkeeper.
"Our first goal is to always get the shutout and our defense was tremendous tonight," head coach Mikki Denney Wright said. "For the first time this season, we were able to get an attacking rhythm. Kaitlin was outstanding for us at the midfield, while our forwards applied a lot of pressure."
Minnesota will close out the tournament on Saturday afternoon against the University of Montana at 3 p.m. Central. This will be the first time since 1999 that the Golden Gophers have played on consecutive days.
"Boise State played well tonight," Denney Wright said. "Now, our biggest concern is recovery. It's rare to play matches on consecutive days, but there's nothing we can do about that. We just have to be ready to play and put together back-to-back solid efforts."
