The Golden Gopher soccer team (3-3, 0-1) dropped its Big Ten opener in overtime against Indiana University, 2-1, on Friday night in Bloomington, Ind. The Hoosiers' Jenna Babcock scored with 46 seconds to play in the first overtime as Indiana improved to 5-1 on the season and 1-0 in the Big Ten.
The Hoosiers dominated the first half, but it was Minnesota that got on the scoreboard first. Becky Dellaria's corner kick was deflected out to the top of the box. Laura Hoppe took control and fired a shot from 18 yards out that sailed through the hands of goalkeeper Lauren Fabbro to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute.
The lead would not last long as Indiana answered back less than two minutes later. On a corner kick by Ali Brown, Kristen Radcliffe was stationed in front of the goal and her header found the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
Indiana held a 14-2 advantage in shots on goal in the first half, including a 5-1 edge in shots on goal.
The Golden Gophers improved in the second half and spent plenty of time in the Indiana zone, but neither team was able to break the tie. The Hoosiers outshot the Golden Gophers, 5-1, in the second half and had the only shot on goal in the 45-minute period.
The Hoosiers ended the contest with 46 seconds left in the first overtime. Goalkeeper Molly Schneider ran out on a long Indiana shot, but was distracted by a Hoosier and Golden Gopher player in front of her. The ball bounced past Schneider and Babcock kicked it into the open net for the Indiana win. Babcock had just entered the game as a reserve.
"Indiana dominated the first 20 minutes, but I thought we took control in the second half," head coach Mikki Denney Wright. "We used just 12 players tonight and I'm proud of the way we competed. It's a disappointing way to finish, but it's the best we've played all year."
Minnesota travels to West Lafayette, Ind., for a Sunday match against Purdue.
