aThe University of Minnesota soccer program has announced its 2005 schedule. The Golden Gophers will face seven teams that qualified for last year's NCAA Championship, including two teams, Illinois and Ohio State, that reached the quarterfinals. The schedule features seven games at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium, highlighted by a regular-season finale against Penn State, winner of seven straight league titles.

Following a pair of exhibition matches at Dayton and Creighton, Minnesota opens up its schedule with seven of its first eight contests on the road. The Golden Gophers will face Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb., on Aug 26. The Cornhuskers reached the third round in last year's NCAA Tournament. Minnesota will also face Drake in Des Moines on Aug. 28.

Minnesota will then travel to the state of Texas for matchups against Baylor on Sept. 2, and at Texas Tech on Sept. 4. Baylor claimed wins over No. 22 Nebraska and No. 16 Texas last season. The Golden Gophers will also travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa, for a non-conference battle with Northern Iowa on Sept. 9.

The Golden Gophers open their home slate on Sunday, Sept. 11, against South Dakota State. In the teams' first-ever meeting a year ago, Minnesota upended the JackRabbits, 2 -1. It was SDSU's first year competing at the Division I level.

Minnesota closes out the non-conference portion of its schedule in Hanover, N.H., in a tournament hosted by Dartmouth College. The Golden Gophers face The Big Green on Friday, Sept. 16, and will face Villanova on Sunday, Sept. 18. The Wildcats reached the second round of last year's national tournament.

The Golden Gophers open Big Ten play at home against Purdue and Indiana, Sept. 23 -25. Minnesota will also host Iowa, Illinois and Ohio State, along with the Nittany Lions. The Golden Gophers will travel to Wisconsin and Northwestern, Sept. 30-Oct. 1. Minnesota will also meet Michigan State and Michigan on the road, Oct. 21-23.

Minnesota is coming off an 8-10-0 season under first-year head coach Mikki Denney Wright. It is the most wins for the program since the 2000 season. The Golden Gophers return five of their top six scorers, highlighted by junior Haley Lentsch and senior Becky Dellaria. Minnesota also returns goalkeeper Molly Schneider. A former transfer from Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Schneider's five shutouts were the most by a Golden Gopher goalkeeper since 2000.
