MTF: Gophers Dominate Field Events at Northwest Open

titleThe Gopher Men's track and field team opened the 2005 indoor season by hosting the Northwest Open Saturday at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse. Minnesota athlete's won five field events titles, including a sweep of the top three places in the weight throw.

Senior Andy Tilstra won the weight throw with a mark of 61-10 1/4, while teammates Curt Schoenfelder (60-5 3/4) and Adam Schnaible (58- 9 1/4) finished second and third respectively. Schnaible, a sophomore, also won the shot put with a throw of 53-7. Sophomore David Kelly took the long jump crown (22-10), junior Ato Taylor placed first in the triple jump (45-7) and sophomore Matt Merkey won the pole vault (15-5). Senior co-captain Bryant Howe finished second in the high jump clearing 6-11 3/4.

On the track, junior Erik Grumstrup took first in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:57.80, while redshirt-freshman teammate Todd Johnson finished second (1:58.70). Runner-up finishes were also posted by senior Travis Brandstatter in the 60- meter high hurdles (8.17) and senior Vince Donahoe in the 600 meter run (1:22.89).

Minnesota will be in action again on Saturday, January 15 when they host the Minnesota Open. Start time is scheduled for 10 a.m.
