WHK: Gophers Earn 2-0 Shutout Over Bemidji State

Although the Gophers outshot the Beavers, 18-4, in the first period, Minnesota could not get the puck across the red line. Minnesota had a five-on-three opportunity for 1:10, but could not convert. Of the Gophers’ 18 shots, eight came on the power play, while three came during the penalty kill. Minnesota had three penalties called against it in the first period, including a five-on-three opportunity for BSU. However, like the Gophers, BSU could not convert. In all, Minnesota had 25 total shots attempted, while holding BSU to 10.
Minnesota got on the board at 7:53 of the second period when Erica McKenzie scored her first power-play goal of the season and fourth of her career. Andrea Nichols started the play, passing it to Marvin near the left boards. Gigi Marvin crept in towards the bottom of the circle and passed the puck to McKenzie, who was camped out on the far side. McKenzie fired a shot, top-shelf, for her second goal of the season. The Gophers finished the period with 15 shots on goal to BSU’s four.
The Gophers added their second goal of the game at 10:02 of the third period. McKenzie took the initial shot. It was stopped by BSU goalie Emily Brookshaw, but was left just in front of the red line. Nichols was there to bat in the goal for her second of the season. Anya Miller was credited with the second assist.
The Beavers had their second five-on-three opportunity late in the third period, but were unable to score. BSU’s best chance of the period came with 6:40 left in the period. Brittony Chartier stopped the first shot, but BSU was there for the rebound. Jessica Pullar was there for the rebound attempt, but the puck slide across the crease to avoid the goal. With 1:30 remaining in the game, BSU pulled Brookshaw to add the extra attacker. However, the Gophers held of the Beavers for the 2-0 final . Minnesota finished the game scoring two power-play goals in 10 chances. The Gophers rattled off 19 of their 42 shots with the extra attacker.
In all, 50 penalty minutes were called for 21 penalties. The Maroon and Gold held BSU to a 0-10 on the power play and allowed just six shots during that time. Chartier, a freshman, earned her second win of the season, sitting at 2-1-0. It is her second shutout win in her short Gopher career, with her first coming in her first career game as a Gopher against Connecticut (10/7). Chartier had four saves in the first, four in the second and three in the third for a total of 11.
The Gophers will look for the sweep tomorrow afternoon at 2:07 p.m. Minnesota holds a 24-0-3 all-time record against the Beavers.
