(9-6-2,Freshman Lindsey Schwartz scored with just over 16 minutes to play as the Golden Gopher soccer team (9-6-2, 6-3-0) defeated Michigan, 1-0, in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Sunday afternoon. Senior goalkeeper Molly Schneider recorded her seventh shutout of the season. Minnesota’s six Big Ten wins are the most since the team finished 6-4-0 in 1999.

“Our defensive effort today was sensational,” head coach Mikki Denney Wright said. “Our players were not happy with their effort on Friday night so today they came out and played the way they are capable of. We’re going to need this type of effort next Friday when Penn State comes to town.”

After a scoreless first half, Minnesota nearly broke the stalemate with 30 minutes to play. Senior Becky Dellaria got behind the Michigan defense, but her shot was covered up as it left her foot by Wolverine goalkeeper Madison Gates.

The Golden Gophers broke through in the 73rd minute with the game-winner. Senior Nicki Burnie threw the ball in from the sideline. Schwartz fielded it and sent a high arching shot from 25 yards out that sailed over Gates and into the far corner of the goal.

Schneider and the Minnesota defense took over from there. The Golden Gophers held the Big Ten’s second-most potent offense to just nine shot attempts and two shots on goal. Minnesota limited Michigan standouts Therese Heaton and Melissa Dobbyn to just three shot attempts in the match. The duo entered the game with 19 goals on the season.

The Golden Gophers close out the regular season next Friday at home against top-ranked and unbeaten Penn State. Tickets for the match are just one dollar.
