VB: Minnesota Defeats Iowa in Three Games in Midweek Match

Junior Kelly Bowman (Maple Grove, Minn.) had eight kills, 30 assist and 12 digs for Minnesota. Senior Paula Gentil (Forteleaza Ceara’, Brazil) had a match-high 23 digs. Malama Peniata (Plymouth, Minn.) had 12 digs, while Sarah Florian (Holland, Ohio) had eight kills and 10 digs.
The two teams exchanged leads throughout the early portion of the first game, as there were three lead changes before Iowa took a 9-8 lead. Minnesota answered with seven of the next eight points to take a 16-10 lead to force an Iowa timeout. The Golden Gophers pushed the lead out to 20-13, before Iowa scored three of the next four points to cut it to 21-16. Minnesota scored the next four points to push the lead out to 25-16. Iowa responded with three of the next four points to cut it to 26-19. The Golden Gophers pushed it to game point at 29- 21, but the Hawkeyes fought off three straight points to cut it to 29- 24. Jones finished it off with a kill to give Minnesota game one 30- 24.
Minnesota outhit Iowa .244 to .106 in the first game, and had 17 kills to the Hawkeyes’ 13. The Golden Gophers also outdug Iowa 23-to- 14 in the first game. Jones and Cumpston led the way with four kills apiece, while Gentil had 12 digs in the game.
In game two Minnesota took an early 10-8 lead over Iowa. The Golden Gophers expanded the lead with 13 of the next 16 points to go up 23- 11. Iowa answered with four straight points to cut it to 23-15. However, Minnesota scored three of the next four points to move ahead by 10 points at 26-16. The Hawkeyes stormed back with five straight points to cut it to 26-21, but Cumpston halted their momentum with back-to-back kills to give Minnesota a 28-21 lead. Bowman followed with a service ace to make it game point at 29-21. After Iowa fought off game point, Kyla Roehrig (Papillions, Neb.) delivered a kill to give Minnesota game two 30-22.
The Golden Gophers outhit the Hawkeyes .275 to .106 in game two, and had 18 kills to 13 for Iowa. Cumpston paced Minnesota with five kills in the game, while Jones had four kills in five swings.
Minnesota took an early 12-9 lead in game one, but Iowa cut it to 12- 11 with consecutive points. The Golden Gophers scored four consecutive points to go up 16-11. Iowa cut the lead to 19-16, but Minnesota scored four of the next five points to go up 23-17. The Hawkeyes cut the lead to 26-22, but the two teams exchanged the next four points to make it 28-24. Bowman delivered a kill to make it game point at 29-24. Iowa fought off two match points to make it 29-26, but Bowman followed with a kill to give Minnesota the match at 30-26.
Minnesota outhit Iowa .287 to .131 for the night, and had 58 kills to 39 for Hawkeyes. The Golden Gophers outdug Iowa 66 to 43 on the night as well.
Iowa was led by Catherine Smale who had 10 kills and eight digs. Kiley Fister had 26 assists and six digs, while Emily Hiza had 12 digs.
Minnesota will host Indiana in a Big Ten matchup at Williams Arena on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m.
