WSD: Minnesota Falls To Indiana 177.5-122.5

The No. 23 University of Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team lost to No. 16 Indiana 177.5 -122.5 this afternoon at University Aquatic Center. Freshman Christine Jennings led the way for the Gophers, winning the 500 and 1000 freestyle events. The Gophers fell to 2-1 on the year.
Jennings led a pack of Gophers that posted the top three finishers in the 500 freestyle. Jennings touched the wall in 4:51.41 and was followed closely by another Gopher freshman Yuen Kobayashi in 4:51.61. Junior Valerie Tukey took third place in 4:58.71. Jennings clocked a 10:04.19 to win the 1000 freestyle with ease. Indiana’s Lauren Torpey was second in 10:13.22 while freshmen Katie Brosseau was third in 10:15.87.
Kobayashi claimed the victory in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:50.57 while senior Kate Hardt was third in a time of 1:52.67. Senior Katie Wind was Minnesota’s other event winner, taking the 200 backstroke in 2:01.96. Wind also led Minnesota in the 100 backstroke, finishing second in 57.22.
In the 100 breaststroke, junior Jamie Howard posted a time of 1: 05.91 to finished second. Sophomore Erin O’Neil was Minnesota’s top finisher in the 200 butterfly in a time of 2: 08.69 while freshman Erin Holtmeyer placed second in the 50 freestyle in a time of 23.89. Freshman Stacy Busack was third in 23.90.
The Gophers had a strong performance in the 100 freestyle, finishing 2-3-4. Senior Sarah Perrott was second in 51.87, followed by freshman Meredith McCarthy (52.24) and Holtmeyer (52.41). Freshman Jenny Shaughnessy led the Gophers in the 200 individual medley, touching second in 2:07.13.
Indiana won both relays, the 200 medley and 800 freestyle. In the 200 medley relay, the team of Wind, Mary Patrek, Lindsey St. Martin and Perrott finished in 1:45.94, just off Indiana’s time of 1:45.51. The 800 free relay team of Jennings, Kobayashi, Tukey and McCarthy was touched out by Indiana on the final lap of the race. Minnesota clocked a 7: 28.59 while Indiana timed a 7:28.24.
Minnesota hosts North Carolina and North Dakota on Friday and Saturday, November 5-6 at University Aquatic Center. The meet begins at 6 p.m. on Friday and 12 p.m. on Saturday.
