VB: Ninth-Ranked Minnesota Defeats Indiana in Three Games

Junior Meghan Cumpston (Red Bluff, Calif.) had a season-high 18 kills to lead the attack for Minnesota. Junior Meredith Nelson (St. Croix Falls, Wis.) also tied a season-high with 15 kills, and hit .565 (15- 2-23) for the Golden Gophers. Sarah Florian (Holland, Ohio) rounded out the three Minnesota players in double-figure kills with 12, and had 11 digs for a double-double.
Senior Paula Gentil (Forteleaza Ceara’, Brazil) had a match-high 21 digs, while Kelly Bowman (Maple Grove, Minn.) finished with 34 assists and a season-high 17 digs. Freshman Kyla Roehrig (Papillion, Neb.) came in during the second game and recorded eight kills, as she hit .636 (8-1-11) for the night.
As a team Minnesota had 63 kills in just three games, while limiting Indiana to 37 for the night. The Golden Gophers also hit .312, while limiting the Hoosiers to a .137 hitting percentage.
Minnesota jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in game one, but Indiana scored four of the next five points to cut it to 9-7. The Golden Gophers answered with four of the next five points to take a 13-8 lead over the Hoosiers. Indiana responded with three straight points to cut the lead to 13-11.
The two teams exchanged the next 10 points to make it 18-16. Indiana cut the score to 19-18, but Minnesota rattled off nine of the next 12 points to take a 28-21 lead over Indiana. The Hoosiers moved it to 28- 22, but Cumpston delivered a kill to give Minnesota game point at 29- 22. Indiana fought off game point to make it 29-23, but Bowman delivered a kill to give the Golden Gophers game one at 30-23.
Minnesota outhit Indiana .366 to .175 and had 20 kills to 12 for the Hoosiers. Cumpston led the way with six kills in the game, while Nelson had five. Florian also had four kills and six digs for Minnesota.
The Golden Gophers jumped out to a 6-3 lead in game two, but Indiana answered with seven of the next 10 points to go up 10-9. Minnesota scored the next two points to reclaim the lead, but Indiana got it right back with consecutive points to make it 12-11. Neither team led by more then one point until the Hoosiers moved ahead 22-20. After a timeout, the Golden Gophers scored two points tying the game at 22 on a Cumpston kill.
Minnesota scored two of the next three points with a pair of kills by Cumpston to go up 24-23. However, the Hoosiers answered with three straight points to go up 26-24 to force a Golden Gopher timeout. Out of the timeout, Minnesota scored to cut the lead to one and followed with a kill by Cumpston to tie the score at 26. The Golden Gophers took the lead at 27-26 on an Indiana error. Sophomore Jessy Jones (Naperville, Ill.) and freshman Kyla Roehrig (Papillion, Neb.) combined on a block to make it 28-26. Roehrig followed with a kill to make it game point at 29-26. Roehrig and Jones again combined on a block to give Minnesota game two 30-26.
The Golden Gophers outhit the Hoosiers .269 to .130 in game two, and had 21 kills to 13 for Indiana. Cumpston had six kills in the game, while Florian had five. Gentil also had 13 digs in the game.
Minnesota jumped out to a 5-3 lead in game three, but Indiana scored seven of the next 10 points to take a 10-8 lead. With the score at 10- 8, the power temporarily went out at University Gymnasium causing a 14-minute delay. When play resumed, the Golden Gophers tied at 10 with consecutive points. However, the Hoosiers pushed the lead out to 14-12 with four of the next six points.
Minnesota responded with 11 of the next 14 points to take a 23-17 lead. Indiana cut the lead to 24-21 with four of the next four points. However, the Hoosiers would get no closer as the Golden Gophers moved to game point at 29-24. On match point, freshman Kelly Fallon (Burlington, Wis.) served a ball that Indiana mishandled over the net that went right to Cumpston for a kill to end the match.
Indiana was led by Rachel Gerling who had 11 kills and nine digs. Erica Short also had 10 kills for the Hoosiers. Laura Holm had 33 assists, while Hana Ros had 11 digs.
Minnesota will have a week layoff before it heads to No. 22 Purdue on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. The Golden Gophers will also head to Illinois on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. Minnesota’s match with Illinois will be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis on ESPN 2 on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 1:30. Both matches will be webcast on gophersports.com.
