VB: Minnesota Defeats Michigan in Four-Game Road Match

Freshman Kyla Roehrig (Papillion, Neb.) led the attack with 12 kills and five blocks on the night. Junior Meredith Nelson (St. Croix Falls, Wis.) also had double-figure kills with 10 on the night, along with four blocks.
Senior Paula Gentil (Forteleaza Ceara’, Brazil) had a season-high 35 digs, along with three service aces. Sophomore Sarah Florian (Holland, Ohio) had nine kills, 13 digs and two service aces for Minnesota.
Junior Kelly Bowman (Maple Grove, Minn.) also had nine kills and 31 assists. Senior Jessica Byrnes (Minnetonka, Minn.) was inserted into game three at opposite hitter and hit .778 (7-0-9) with seven kills in nine swings. Malama Peniata (Plymouth, Minn.) also had three service aces for the Golden Gophers.
Minnesota had its third double-figure service ace effort of the season with 10 on the night, while Michigan had 14 service errors and just three service aces. The Golden Gophers now have 22 service aces in their last two matches.
Michigan jumped out to a 6-2 lead in game one, but Minnesota scored 10 of the next 13 points to take a 12-9 lead. The Wolverines scored three straight points to tie the score at 12, but the Golden Gophers scored two straight points to go up 14-12. Michigan rattled off four straight points to take a 16-14 lead over Minnesota. However, the Golden Gophers scored five of the next six points to take a 19-17 lead. Michigan scored the next two points to tie it at 19, and scored five of the next seven points following that point to move ahead 24- 21.
Minnesota came right back with three straight points to tie it at 24. Michigan answered with three straight points to go up 27-24. After the Golden Gophers cut it to 27-25, Cumpston delivered back-to-back kills to tie it at 27. The Wolverines went up 28-27, but Nelson delivered back-to-back kills to give Minnesota game point at 29-28. Michigan scored the next two points to make it game point at 30-29. Minnesota responded with the next two points to move it to game point at 31-30. Florian delivered the kill to give the Golden Gophers game one 32-30.
Minnesota had 19 kills to 13 for Michigan, despite being outhit .190 to .123 in the game. The Wolverines also outblocked the Wolverines 6.0-to-1.0 in the game. Nelson led the way with six kills in the game, while Cumpston had four. Gentil also led the way with 11 digs in game one.
The Golden Gophers got out to a 10-8 lead in game two, but Michigan scored six straight points to take a 14-10 lead. Minnesota cut the lead down to 18-15, but the Wolverines scored three straight points to go up 21-15. The Golden Gophers cut the lead down to 23-19, but Michigan pushed the lead out to 26-20. With the score at 28-23, the Wolverines scored the final two points to win game two 30-23 to even the match at one game apiece.
Michigan outhit Minnesota .275 to .030 in game two, and had 15 kills to 10 for the Golden Gophers.
Minnesota jumped out to an 8-5 lead in game three, but Michigan scored four of the next five points to tie it at nine. The Golden Gophers answered with three straight points to go up 12-9, but the Wolverines answered with three straight to tie it at 12. Minnesota responded with six of the next points to push the lead out 18-14. The two teams exchanged the next eight points to push the score out to 22- 18. However, the Golden Gophers scored five of the next seven points to move ahead 27-20. Michigan scored two of the next three points to make it 28-22, but Minnesota pushed it to game point at 29-22. Malama Peniata (Plymouth, Minn.) delivered a service ace to give Minnesota game three 30-22.
The Golden Gophers had four service aces in game three, while Michigan had five service errors and no service aces. Minnesota was outhit .250 to .200 in the game, while the Wolverines also had 16 kills to 13 for the Golden Gophers. Roehrig and Bowman led the way with four kills apiece in the game, while Gentil had nine digs.
Minnesota jumped out to a 5-2 lead in game one, but Michigan scored four of the next five points to tie it at six. The Golden Gophers responded with five of the next six points to take a 12-7 lead. Minnesota pushed the lead out to 15-9, before Michigan answered with seven of the next eight points to tie the game at 16. Minnesota scored the next point to make it 17-16. Nelson followed with a kill and Bowman delivered a service ace to give the Golden Gophers a 19-16 lead.
The two teams split the next six points to move the score to 22-19. Byrnes and Florian delivered back-to-back kills to give Minnesota 24- 19 lead. After Michigan made it 24-20, Bowman delivered a solo block and a kill to make it 26-20.
Jessy Jones (Naperville, Ill.) followed with a solo block after a Michigan timeout to make it 27-20. The Golden Gophers scored the next point to make it 28-20. Michigan answered with the next three points to cut it to 28-23. Minnesota pushed it to match point at 29- 23. Michigan fought off match point to make it 29-24, but Roehrig delivered a kill to give Minnesota the match.
Minnesota outblocked Michigan 10.0-to-9.0 on the night. The Golden Gophers were outhit .236 to .171, and the Wolverines also had 60 kills to 58 for Minnesota. Michigan also outdug Minnesota 75 to 63 on the night.
Michigan was led by Lyndsay Miller who had 19 kills and six blocks. Katie Bruzdzinski and Danielle Pflum each had 11 kills. Stesha Selsky had 27 digs, while Mara Martin had 52 assists and nine digs.
Minnesota will head to East Lansing, Mich. to take on Michigan State on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. (CT). That match will be webcast on gophersports.com.
