Game Notes

  • Amir Pinnix took his first carry since the Florida Atlantic game 45 yards.
  • Minnesota has 500 yards or more of total offense in seven of nine games this year
  • Laurence Maroney needs 99 yards to break the school's single-season rushing record. Chris Darkins rushed for a record 1,443 in 1994.
  • Gary Russell has a rushing touchdown in seven of nine games this season. He had a career-high three touchdowns today, one shy of the school record. His 15 rushing touchdowns ranks second in school history (single-season).
  • Laurence Maroney moved into second-place all-time for career rushing yards. Thomas Hamner ranks second with 3,810 yards.
  • Gary Russell established a new career-high for rushing. His previous best was 139 yards against Wisconsin.

  • Four different Golden Gophers have found the endzone today.
  • Bryan Cupito moved into sole possession of sixth place all-time with 26 career touchdown passes.
  • Matt Spaeth caught his seventh career touchdown pass in the third quarter.
  • Minnesota collects its first interception since the Purdue game in the third quarter. Anthony Montgomery gets his second career interception
  • Minnesota has reached double digits in 38 straight games. Ohio State held Minnesota to three points on Nov. 2, 2002.
  • Gary Russell passed the 100-yard rushing mark for the fourth time this season.
  • Minnesota is 1-1 this season when it trails at halftime. The Golden Gophers defeated Michigan, 23-20, after they trailed 13-10 at the break. Minnesota is 6-34 when trailing at halftime under Glen Mason.
  • Senior Kyle McKenzie recorded his third tackle for loss of the seaosn in the second quarter. He has 16.5 for his career.
  • Bryan Cupito has completed 18 of 22 passes for 266 yards in the first quarter of his last four games (including today).
  • True freshman Steve Davis recorded his first sack since the Michigan game in the first quarter. it's his sixth sack of the season. His total is tied for ninth in school history (single-season).
  • The Golden Gophers have not been shut out since Nov. 22, 1997, a school record span of 93 games. The last time UM was shut out was in a 31-0 loss at Iowa.
  • Justin Valentine recorded his first rushing touchdown of the season in the first quarter and fifth of his career. Valentine caught a touchdown pass earlier this season.
  • This is the first time in five games that Minnesota has scored first.
  • Minnesota has not intercepted a pass since the Purdue game on Sept. 24, a span of four-plus games. John Pawielski and Terrance Campbell each recorded an interception. Minnesota had five picks in the first four games...none since.
  • Senior wide receiver Jared Ellerson will not play due to injury
  • Mark Setterstrom and Greg Eslinger made their 47th consecutive starts today.
  • Minnesota forced 14 turnovers in the first four games, but just one in the last four.
  • Minnesota has not beaten Purdue and Indiana in the same year since 1990.
  • Indiana has given up an average of 41.7 points in its last three games
  • In last year's 30-21 loss to Indiana, the Hoosiers held Minnesota to just 169 yards rushing. Laurence Maroney had 89 yards on 16 plays, while Marion Barber had 65 yards on 20 carries. In 2003, Maroney had 164 yards on 18 carries in a 55-7 win at the Metrodome.
  • Minnesota ranks first in the Big Ten with 254.2 rushing yards per conference game. The Hoosiers rank sixth against the rush, allowing 170.6 yards per game.
  • Minnesota has not won in Bloomington since 1985, a span of seven games. The Golden Gophers defeated the Hoosiers, 22-7, on Oct. 19, 1985. Indiana is averaging 31.7 points in those seven victories.
  • This is the 63rd meeting between Minnesota and Indiana. The Golden Gophers lead the series by a 34-25-3 advantage. The two teams have split the last six meetings.
