MaxwUniversity of Minnesota junior running back Laurence Maroney has been named a semifinalist for the 2005 Maxwell Award, which is given annually to the nation’s collegiate player of the year. Through nine games, Maroney leads the Big Ten in rushing, averaging 149.4 yards per game. The St. Louis, Mo., native also has 10 rushing touchdowns. In last Saturday’s win over Indiana, Maroney moved past Thomas Hamner into second place all time in career rushing yards with 3,814 yards.

Maroney joins Reggie Bush (USC), Brian Calhoun (Wisconsin), Brodie Croyle (Alabama), Maurice Drew (UCLA), Cody Hodges (Texas Tech), Matt Leinart (USC), Brady Quinn (Notre Dame), D.J. Shockley (Georgia), Drew Stanton (Michigan State), DeAngelo Williams (Memphis) and Vince Young (Texas) as semifinalists.

Maroney has 1,345 yards rushing this season and is only 98 yards away from equaling Chris Darkins’ 1994 mark of 1,443 yards, which is the single-season rushing record. Maroney also ranks second in career 100-yard rushing games (20), second in career all- purpose yards (4,666), fourth in career rushing touchdowns (32) and fifth in career rushing attempts (627) in school history.

Maroney was named the Cingular Wireless/ABC Sports All-America Player of the Week earlier this season for his performance in a 42-35 double overtime victory over Purdue. He was the first Minnesota player ever to claim the honor, which is the only major college football award determined exclusively by fan voting.
