MHK: Seawolf Goaltender Stymies Minnesota in 3-2 Home Loss

The Seawolves took the game's first lead at 8:36 of the opening period when Jim Dahl, a late addition to the UAA lineup, scored his first goal of the season. The Golden Gophers turned the puck over at their blueline with Nick Lowe taking a Brandon Segal pass and feeding Dahl on the left side to one-time past UM goaltender Kellen Briggs on the stick side.
The Maroon and Gold controlled play for the majority of the opening period, out-shooting the Seawolves, 20-7, but going 0-for-3 on the power play.
Alaska Anchorage grabbed the 3-0 lead midway through the second period with Minnesota finally getting on the board at 14:48 to make the score 3-1 after two periods. The Seawolves struck first in the second stanza when Martin Stuchlik netted his fifth goal of the season at 1:21. Lee Green fired a shot from the left point with Stuchlik finding the puck in a scramble in front of the net and knocking it past a sprawling Briggs.
UAA made it 3-0 at the 10:14 mark of the period with Segal's second goal of the season. Skating on a 4-on-3 power play, Segal one-timed a Chad Anderson pass from the top of the right circle to beat Briggs on the glove side. Shea Hamilton was credited with the second assist.
The Golden Gophers finally found the back of the net at 14:48 when Mike Vannelli took a Gino Guyer pass at the center point and fired a wrist shot that beat UAA goaltender John DeCaro to the 5-hole. Barry Tallackson earned the second assist on the play.
Once again, Minnesota heavily out-shot Alaska Anchorage witha 19-11 advantage in the second period. Through two periods, UM was out-shooting the Seawolves, 39-18. Briggs was replaced in the net by senior Justin Johnson after the second period.
The third period saw the Golden Gophers out-shoot UAA, 19-3, but manage only one goal - a power-play goal with the extra attacker at 19:52. The Maroon and Gold threw everything into the attack in the final stanza, but only managed to beat DeCaro with Gino Guyer's 10th goal of the season. From the point, Chris Harrington threw the puck at the net with it deflecting off Guyer's skate to beat DeCaro to the 5-hole. Tyler Hirsch picked up the second assist on the 6-on-4 lamplighter.
For the game, Minnesota fired a season-high 59 shots on goal to the Seawolves' 21. It marked the first time UM has had 50 or more shots since notching 52 in a 5-1 win over Michigan State on Nov. 28, 2003. Briggs took the loss with 15 saves, falling to 19-10-0, while DeCaro got the win with 57 saves to improve to 3-2-1. The Golden Gophers went 1- for-6 on the power play, while UAA went 1-for-2.
The WCHA rivals close out the season series tomorrow at 7:07 p.m., at Mariucci Arena.
