"I feel very good about the three additions we have made to our coaching staff along with the realignment of our defensive staff headed up by David Lockwood," Mason said.
Lockwood, a Media, Pa., native, had served as the Gophers' secondary coach since his arrival in 2002 and was the team's defensive coordinator in the Gophers' 20-16 victory over Alabama in last season's Music City Bowl. Under Lockwood's direction, the Gophers posted 11 interceptions in 2003 and 12 interceptions in 2004, marking the first time since 1995-96 that the Gophers have posted at least 10 interceptions in consecutive seasons. In 2002, the Gophers led the Big Ten in pass defense and also finished among the top 20 in the nation in that category.
"I am excited about this opportunity and I am thankful that Coach Mason has given me a chance to lead the defense," Lockwood said. "I am looking forward to the upcoming season in this capacity."
Cooks comes to Minnesota from Western Illinois where he served as defensive backs coach and assisted on all of the special teams units last season. A native of Irving, Tex., Cooks began his coaching career in 2003 at his alma mater, Nimitz High School, before joining the Kansas State coaching staff as a graduate assistant in 2003 when the Wildcats won the Big 12 title.
Cooks was a four-year letterwinner at defensive back at the University of Iowa from 1994 -97 and later graduated from Iowa in 2000 with a degree in sociology. He was the team's defensive MVP, team captain and an All-Big Ten selection at safety while playing for the Hawkeyes. Cooks was a fifth-round draft pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 1998 and also played for Green Bay, Atlanta and Jacksonville before retiring from the NFL in 2001. He also played for the Chicago Enforcers of the XFL in 2001.
Cooks is married to the former Valencia Mitchell.
"It is great to be back in the Big Ten and to have an opportunity to work in the Midwest," said Cooks. "I am looking forward to working with the rest of the staff and the team."
Bailey was the defensive line coach at Oklahoma State last season and held the same position responsibilities at Middle Tennessee State in 2003. A Morgantown, W.V., native, Bailey spent five seasons (1998-2002) at Louisiana-Lafayette as the defensive line coach. Before his arrival at Louisiana-Lafayette, Bailey served as the defensive line coach at Virginia Military Institute from 1995-97. Bailey's first coaching experience came at West Virginia, where he worked with the defensive secondary from 1993-94.
Bailey was a four-year letterman at Tennessee from 1988-91, playing on two SEC championship teams. He led the Volunteers in tackles-for-loss and quarterback sacks his junior season and helped Tennessee lead the SEC in total defense his senior year. Bailey graduated from Tennessee in 1992 with a degree in sociology.
"I am very excited to be joining such an outstanding program," Bailey said. "Minnesota has a rich tradition and history and I am looking forward to helping the program build off their current success and hopefully achieving a Big Ten championship."
Bailey and his wife, Angela, have one daughter, Evann Leigh.
