The Minnesota baseball team will begin its 2005 season at Arkansas on Friday, Feb. 25 at 2:35 p.m. Minnesota will also play the Razorbacks on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 1:05 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 27 at 1:05 p.m. Arkansas enters the series ranked No. 21 in the Sports Weekly/ESPN Coaches Poll. It marks the third time in four seasons that the Golden Gophers will open at a ranked opponent. In 2002, Minnesota started the season at No. 7 Miami (Fla.), in 2004 the Golden Gophers opened at No. 12 Florida Atlantic and this year they will open at No. 21 Arkansas. Minnesota has played Arkansas seven times. The Golden Gophers won the last meeting 6-0 in the 2001 Dairy Queen Classic. It will be the first time since 1939 that Minnesota has started off its season against SEC opponent. In 1939, the Golden Gophers opened the season against LSU.
Minnesota is 10-13 in season openers under current head coach John Anderson. Only five times in 23 years, have the Golden Gophers opened the season at home under Anderson. Since 1989, the Golden Gophers have played 12 season openers against ranked opponents. Seven of those opponents have been ranked in the top 10. Last season the Golden Gophers opened the season at No. 12 Florida Atlantic, before taking on No. 10 Notre Dame in a neutral-site game and travelling down to No. 4 Miami (Fla.) for a single game.
