BB: Minnesota Drops 9-1 Decision to Harvard

takThe Minnesota baseball team (2-7) dropped a 9-1 decision to Harvard (2-1) on Sunday, Mar. 13 at the Metrodome.

Harvard got on the board early with two runs in the top of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Steffan Wilson delivered a triple that brought home two runs to give the Crimson the early 2-0 lead.

The Crimson added a single run in the top of the third to push the lead to 3-0, and opened up their lead to 6-0 with three runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Harvard moved it to 7-0 in the top of the seventh inning with a single run. The Golden Gophers scored to make it 7-1 when Jake Elder (Delta, British Columbia) tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Crimson added two runs in the ninth for the final deficit of 9-1.

Minnesota starter Josh Oslin (Mora, Minn.) took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season as he gave up five runs in three innings. Harvard starter Frank Herrmann pitched six shutout innings, giving up only four hits and striking out five to move to 1-0 on the season.

Freshman Dustin Brabender (Oregon, Wis.) pitched three innings of relief, giving up just three hits and one run, while striking out three batters. Sophomore reliever John Gaub (South St. Paul, Minn.) pitched one and two thirds innings of perfect relief, striking out four batters. Gaub has now struck out 14 batters in his last three appearances (spanning 7.1 innings).

David Hrncirik (Madison, Wis.) led the way offensively, as he went three-for-four with a career-high two stolen bases. Andy Hunter (West St. Paul, Minn.) also reached base three times and was two-for-three. Elder was one-for-four with a run.

Harvard was led by Schuyler Mann who went five-for-five with three runs and two RBI. Wilson and Lance Salsgiver each had two RBI as well for the Crimson.

Minnesota will have two midweek games this week. The Golden Gophers will play Minnesota-Duluth on Tuesday, Mar. 15 at 6:30 p.m., and Wednesday, Mar. 16 at 6:30 p.m. Minnesota will also play a three-game series against Rutgers. The first game will Friday, Mar. 18 at 6:30 p.m., followed by Saturday, Mar. 19 at 2 p.m. and Sunday, Mar. 20 at 12 p.m.
