VB: Meghan Cumpston Transfers to Minnesota Volleyball Program

Cumpston is a 6-1 junior outside hitter from Red Bluff, Calif. She is coming off a sophomore season in which she was third on Arizona in kills per game at 3.31 (278) kpg and was fourth on the team in digs per game at 2.17 (182) dpg in 84 games. Cumpston also received Pac-10 Honorable-Mention All-Academic honors in 2004.
This past season she was named to the Hawai’i and Arizona All-Tournament teams. She also had a career-high 24 kills in a three-game victory at No. 12 UCLA on Oct. 30, 2004, a career-high 23 digs at No. 13 Hawai’i in a five-game loss on Sept. 5, 2004 and tallied a career-high six blocks in four-game loss at No. 5 USC on Oct. 29, 2004.
In 2003, Cumpston played in 23 of 32 matches as a freshman at Arizona. In her freshman season she averaged 1.33 kills per game and 0.57 digs per game.
Cumpston was ranked No. 34 in Volleyball Magazine’s Top 50 coming out of high school. She set the Red Bluff Union High School record for kills in a single-season as a senior in 2002.
With Cumpston joining the program, Minnesota will have eight players on its roster this upcoming year that have been Volleyball Magazine Fab 50 players. All four of this year’s early signees, sophomore Kelly Bowman (Maple Grove, Minn.), sophomore Meredith Nelson (St. Croix Falls, Wis.) and freshman Jessy Jones (Naperville, Ill.) were all on the Fab 50 list as high school seniors.
“We are very lucky to get Meghan (Cumpston), whose desire to leave Arizona coincided with our unexpected need for an outside hitter,” said Hebert. “She is a tremendous athlete who will arrive with two years of experience in the very tough Pac-10 Conference. She will help stabilize our very young left-side hitting corps.”
