"We told our guys that upsets and bonus points were going to be the two keys for us," head coach J Robinson said. "C.P.'s win was very important at 157. I was impressed with the way all of our freshmen performed. Tonight will tell us a lot. We need all 10 of our guys to contribute."
Seeded eighth at 125, Lowe had little trouble in his first round matchup as he earned a 20-5 technical fall against Brandon Strong of Air Force. Lowe led 4-1 after the first period, but pulled away with a reversal to start the second period and then added a takedown and a near fall as time expired. He closed out the match with five takedowns in the finals period. A 2003 All-American, Lowe will face ninth-seeded Coleman Scott of Oklahoma State tonight. Lowe defeated Scott earlier this season in overtime.
Seeded third at 133, Reiter began his tournament run with a 5-0 decision against Iowa State’s Jesse Sundell. Reiter opened the scoring with a takedown midway through the first period and began the second with a reversal. Reiter amassed nearly four minutes of riding time as he easily advanced into the second round. He will face Nebraska’s Dominick Moyer tonight, a wrestler he defeated 6-3 earlier this season.
Schlatter advanced into the second round with an upset of ninth-seeded Derek Zinck of Lehigh, 7-4. Schlatter jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first period, but held just a 6-4 lead entering the third period. With Zinck starting down, Schlatter rode him the entire two minutes to claim the win. He was awarded the bonus point with over two minutes of riding time.
Seeded 10th at 165 pounds, Nagel breezed into the second round with a pin against Jim Bertulis of Bloomsburg. Nagel got the takedown at the 1:20 mark of the first period and was awarded the fall in 1:40. Nagel will face seventh-seeded Jacob Klein of Nebraska in tonight’s second round. Klein defeated Nagel in double overtime earlier this season.
Dretsch led throughout in a 7-3 decision against Joe Lowe of UNC Greensboro. He scored the first takedown at the 1:03 mark of the first period and extended the lead to 5-1 with another takedown late in the second. Lowe cut the lead to 5-3 with a reversal to begin the third, but Dretsch earned the escape and a bonus point for riding time to advance into the second round. Dretsch will face third-seeded Pete Friedl of Illinois tonight. Friedl defeated Dretsch earlier this season by the score of 6-3.
Seeded 10th at 184 pounds, Kish also earned bonus points for the Golden Gophers with a 23-7 technical fall against Cleveland State’s Ron Howard. With just a 7-4 lead entering the second period, Kish extended the lead to 14-5 with two takedowns and a near fall. He secured the technical fall with a takedown as time expired. Kish will face seventh-seeded Tyler Baier of Cornell, a wrestler he defeated 7-4 earlier this season.
Koz rounded out the stellar performance of Minnesota's five rookies with a pin against Landon Seefeldt of Cal State Fullerton. Koz trailed most of the way before tying the match at four with a takedown early in the second period. He earned the fall at the 4:52 mark. Koz will face unseeded Darren Burns of UNC Greensboro. Burns had the biggest upset of the tournament thus far with his pin of third-seeded Chris Skretkowicz of Hofstra. Burns defeated Koz earlier this season, 5-2.
Seeded second at heavyweight, Konrad closed out the first session with a 12-4 major decision against Wyoming’s Dusty Hoffschneider. Leading 7-2 after two periods, Konrad earned the bonus point for the major with two third-period takedowns. He finished with nearly three minutes in riding time. Konrad will face Cornell’s Tyler Shovlin in the second round tonight. Konrad earned a 12-3 major decision against Shovlin earlier this season.
Owen got off to a strong start in his first round match against 11th-seeded Michael Keefe of Tennessee-Chattanooga, but Keefe recovered for a 13-5 major decision. Owen took an early lead with a takedown just five seconds into the match. He extended the lead to 4-0 with a near fall, but Keefe responded to cut the deficit to 4-3 at the end of the first period. Taking a 7-5 lead into the final period, Keefe added a takedown and a near fall to earn the major decision. Owen will face Navy’s Nate Gulosh in tonight’s consolation round.
Osborn drew third-seeded Dustin Manotti in the first round at 149 and was defeated by technical fall, 18-3. Manotti set the pace with five takedowns in the first period alone. Osborn was wrestling at just his eighth career match at 149 after competing at 141 for most of the season. Osborn will face Indiana’s Isaac Knable in the consolation bracket. Osborn pinned Knable to claim fifth place at the Big Ten Championships two weeks ago.
