Oklahoma State leads the team race with 39 points and has a tournament-best eight wrestlers still alive in the championship quarterfinals. Minnesota is second with 28.5 points, followed by Iowa State at 27.5, Oklahoma at 26.5 and Michigan at 25.5.
It was a story of near misses for Minnesota in tonight’s second round. The Golden Gophers suffered six defeats in the round with five of those decided by two points or less.
“We had a good first round this afternoon, but it gets tougher as you go on,” head coach J Robinson said. “I think some our guys lost the belief that they could win. The tournament is not over. We train for the second and third days of tournaments.”
Reiter was tested in his second-round match before defeating Nebraska’s Dominick Moyer, 7-5. After Reiter took a 2-1 lead into the second period, Moyer countered with a reversal, only to be answered by Reiter’s reversal to make it 4-3. Reiter tallied another takedown in the third period, but Moyer once again countered with a reversal to make it 6-5 with less than 10 seconds to go in the match. Reiter held on and was awarded a bonus point for a 2:20 riding time advantage. Reiter will face Lehigh’s Matt Ciasulli in tomorrow morning’s quarterfinals. Reiter earned a 1-0 decision against Ciasulli earlier this season. At 38-5, Reiter is tied for the most wins by a freshman in school history.
Konrad matched Reiter’s effort with a 13-5 major decision against Tyler Shovlin of Cornell. Konrad blew open a 2-0 match with a reversal and four takedowns in the third period. It was Konrad’s 27th win in a row which is tied for sixth best in school history. He also improved to 39-2 on the year. He would become the sixth wrestler in school history to reach 40 wins in a season with a victory tomorrow against Iowa State’s Scott Coleman. Konrad won a 4-3 overtime decision against Coleman earlier this season.
In senior Bobbe Lowe’s match at 125 pounds against ninth-seeded Coleman Scott of Oklahoma State, he trailed 1-0 in the third period before Scott took a 3-0 lead with back points. After Scott was penalized a point for stalling, Lowe got the escape to cut the lead to 3-2. With less than 10 seconds to go in the match, Scott again was called for stalling which knotted the bout at three. Lowe appeared to get the winning takedown as time expired, but it was waved off by the officials. With just over a minute of riding time, Scott was awarded the bonus point to escape with a 4-3 win.
At 157 pounds, freshman C.P. Schlatter was narrowly defeated by Iowa’s Joe Johnston, 5 -3. With Johnston leading 3-2 in the third period, Johnston extended his lead with a takedown with 45 seconds to go in the match. Schlatter got the escape, but was unable to score offensively. Schlatter will meet Central Michigan’s Eric Neil tomorrow in a consolation matchup.
At 165 pounds, junior Matt Nagel dropped a 2-1 decision against seventh-seeded Jacob Klein of Nebraska. After a scoreless period, Klein rode Nagel the entire second period to gain two minutes of riding time. That would prove to be the difference in the match. In the third, Klein earned a point for the escape. He was then penalized a point for stalling with 32 seconds to go in the match. Nagel was unable to get the takedown, as Klein was awarded the bonus point for riding time. Nagel will face Cal Poly’s Brody Barrios in tomorrow’s consolation round.
At 174 pounds, freshman Gabriel Dretsch suffered a pin against third-seeded Pete Friedl of Illinois. Friedl opened with a takedown just over a minute in the match and garnered the fall at 1: 32. Dretsch will meet Wisconsin’s Kelly Flaherty tomorrow morning. Flaherty won both meetings between the two earlier this season.
At 184 pounds, seventh-seeded Tyler Baier of Cornell avenged an earlier loss to freshman Roger Kish with a 4-2 decision. The match came down to the third period as Kish started down. Baier rode Kish the entire two minutes and was awarded a bonus point for riding time. Kish will look to rebound in tomorrow’s consolation round against Rider’s T.J. Morrison.
Freshman Matt Koz was defeated 4-3 on criteria in double overtime against Daren Burns of UNC Greensboro at 197 pounds. After two overtime periods and two tiebreaker periods with the match deadlocked, Burns was awarded a point for a narrow edge in riding time. Koz will compete tomorrow morning in the consolation bracket against Wisconsin’s Ryan Flaherty. Koz won their previous meeting on a last second takedown.
In the consolation bracket, sophomore Quincy Osborn earned his second pin in a row against Indiana’s Isaac Knable. Osborn scored the takedown two minutes into the match and then earned the fall at the 2:24 mark. Osborn also pinned Knable in the fifth-place match at the Big Ten Championships two weeks ago. He will face eighth-seeded Ben Cherrington tomorrow morning.
Minnesota lost one of its 10 NCAA qualifiers after junior Tommy Owen was pinned at 5:28 in his consolation match against Navy’s Nate Gulosh.
Session III begins at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning at the Savvis Center in St. Louis, Mo. The championship quarterfinals along with two rounds of consolation will be held. The quarterfinals will be aired live on ESPNU.
