Minnesota is currently tied with Michigan for third place with 47.5 points. Oklahoma State leads the team race with 78.5 points. Cornell is second with 55.5 points.
Seeded third at 133, Reiter will face second-seeded Shawn Bunch of Edinboro in tonight’s semifinal. Bunch claimed a 7-5 win against Reiter earlier this season at the Southern Scuffle. Reiter improved to 39-5 with the win and in the process, broke Konrad’s freshman single-season school record of 38 wins.
Reiter advanced to the semifinals with an 8-3 decision against unseeded Chad Mendes of Cal Poly. Reiter jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a takedown and a near fall just 26 seconds into the match. Later in the period, Mendes rolled Reiter to his back, but the Golden Gopher was able to roll out of it before any points were scored. Mendes scored a late takedown, but it wasn’t enough as Reiter finished with over a minute of riding time and the victory.
Seeded second at heavyweight, Konrad will meet third-seeded Cain Velasquez of Arizona State tonight. Velasquez is one of just two wrestlers in the nation to defeat Konrad this season. On Dec. 7 in Tempe, Ariz., Konrad was penalized a pair of points for stalling in a 4-3 loss. Konrad’s win today was his 28th straight, which is now the sixth-longest streak in school history. With a 40-2 record, he is now the sixth wrestler in school history to record 40 wins in a single season.
In his quarterfinal match, Konrad claimed a 2-1 decision against 10th-seeded Scott Coleman of Iowa State. Following a scoreless period, Konrad took a 1-0 lead with an escape. Coleman was then penalized a costly point for stalling which gave Konrad a 2-0 lead. In the third period, Coleman cut the lead to 2-1 with an escape, but Konrad held off the Cyclone for the victory.
Senior Bobbe Lowe advanced in the 125-pound consolation bracket with a pair of wins. In his first match, he defeated Northern Iowa’s Chris Helgeson, 5-2, and then topped Penn State’s Adam Smith, 4-3. In his match against Smith, Lowe broke a scoreless tie with a reversal to start the second period. He added a takedown to make it 4-1 and then held on for the one-point win. Lowe avenged a loss to Smith at the Big Ten Championships two weeks ago. An All-American in 2003, Lowe will face seventh-seeded Andrew Hochstrasser of Boise State tonight to earn his second All-American citation.
Freshman C.P. Schlatter is also one win away from garnering his first All-American citation following a pair of wins. Schlatter defeated Central Michigan’s Eric Neil, 6-3, and then defeated Missouri’s Brad Cieleski, 8-3. In the win against Cieleski, Schlatter amassed nearly four minutes of riding time and never trailed in the match. Schlatter will face 10th- seeded Brian Stith of Arizona State tonight.
Junior Matt Nagel won a pair of matches in the first session to advance. He scored a 9-1 major decision against Cal Poly’s Brody Barrios and then defeated Oregon State’s Dan Ellis, 3-0. Nagel will face eighth-seeded Travis Paulson of Iowa State. Paulson defeated Nagel 3-1 earlier this season.
Rounding out Minnesota’s trio of freshmen was Roger Kish. Seeded 10th at 184 pounds, Kish topped T.J. Morrison of Rider, 10-7, and then earned a 7-2 decision against Duke’s Frank Cornily. Kish will meet unseeded Matt Pell of Missouri tonight.
Three Golden Gophers were eliminated this morning. Sophomore Quincy Osborn, freshman Gabriel Dretsch and freshman Matt Koz all finished the tournament with 1-2 records.
Session IV begins at 6 p.m. tonight at the Savvis Center in St. Louis, Mo. The championship semifinals will air tape-delayed on Fox Sports North following the Minnesota-Colorado College men’s hockey game which starts at 7:30 p.m.
