WR: Trio of Golden Gophers Place at the NCAA Championships

3/19/2005 12:00:00 AM | Athletics

cGolden Gopher freshman Mack Reiter earned fourth place at the 2005 NCAA Wrestling Championships this morning in St. Louis, Mo. Junior Matt Nagel placed sixth at 157 pounds, while senior Bobbe Lowe claimed seventh at 125 pounds. Minnesota heavyweight Cole Konrad will wrestle for the NCAA title tonight at 4 p.m. The finals can be seen on ESPN

Minnesota is currently tied for fourth place with Cornell with 72.5 points. Oklahoma State has clinched the team total with 133.0 points already, while Michigan is in second with 79.0 points. Oklahoma is third at 73.5.

Reiter advanced to the third-place match with a dominating performance against 10th- seeded Matt Sanchez of Cal State Bakersfield. Reiter scored the takedown just 26 seconds into the match and put Sanchez in his patented cradle. He was awarded the fall in 1:18. It was Reiter’s 15th pin of the season. That total is sixth-best single-season total in school history and the second-highest total by a Golden Gopher freshman.

In the third-place match against fifth-seeded Tom Clum of Wisconsin, Clum took a 2-0 lead with a takedown with 10 seconds to go in the first period. Following a scoreless second period, Reiter cut the lead to 2-1 with an escape, but Clum held on for the 2-1 victory. Reiter finished his outstanding rookie season with a 40-7 record. That is the most wins by a Golden Gopher freshman and makes him just the seventh wrestler in school history overall to reach the 40-win plateau.

After earning his first All-American citation yesterday, Nagel ran into a buzz saw in his consolation semifinal. Second-seeded Ryan Churella of Michigan earned a takedown and a near fall in the first 30 seconds of the match en route to a 16-0 technical fall. Things didn’t get any better for Nagel in the fifth-place match against sixth-seeded Jon Sioredas of Tennessee-Chattanooga. Leading 3-2 in the third period, Sioredas put Nagel’s shoulders to the mat and gained the pin at the 6:07 mark. Despite the loss, Nagel capped a strong junior season with a 31-15 record. Twenty-nine of his 46 matches were against wrestlers that qualified for the NCAA Championships.

Now a two-time All-American, Lowe capped his career with a 7-3 decision against ninth- seeded Coleman Scott of Oklahoma State. He avenged a second-round loss to the Cowboy freshman. Lowe grabbed early control of the match with a takedown and a near fall in the first minute of the match. He increased the lead to 6-1 with another first-period takedown. Scott was unable to score an offensive point against Lowe. Lowe finishes his senior season with a 36-9 record, as well as a 111-48 career record in three seasons with the Golden Gophers.
