TheGophers center Janel McCarville was named a second-team Associated Press All-American, announced today. The All-America award is her second this season, after earning a spot of the USBWA All-America team earlier this month. McCarville is a repeat selection to the AP list after earning AP All-America honorable mention acclaim as a junior in 2004.

The 2005 AP All-America first team is: Seimone Augustus (Louisiana State), Kendra Wecker (Kansas State), Monique Currie (Duke), Jessica Davenport (Ohio State) and Sandora Irvin (Texas Christian).

McCarville narrowly missed landing a spot on the five-member first team. Centers Davenport and Irvin received the fewest votes among first-team players with 163 and 153 points, respectively, while McCarville had 148 points.

McCarville is a finalist for several other national player of the year awards, including the Wooden Award, Naismith Award and Wade Trophy. The Gophers’ 6-2 center is also a finalist to repeat on the WBCA/Kodak squad.

Minnesota, the No. 3 seed in the Tempe Region, is preparing for its NCAA regional semifinal game versus second-seeded Baylor on Saturday. McCarville is the first Golden Gopher to play in the NCAA Championships in all four years of her collegiate career.
