BB: Minnesota Defeats St. Thomas 9-1 in Midweek Game

Seven Minnesota pitchers combined to limit St. Thomas to one run and six hits. Gary Perinar got the win as he started and pitched two and two thirds shutout innings. Brian Bull (Omaha, Neb.) followed with one and a third shutout innings. Bill Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Luke Beresford (Duluth, Minn.) each followed with one shutout inning of work. Dustin Brabender (Oregon, Wis.) pitched one and two thirds shutout innings, and Tim Theis (Shakopee, Minn.) closed out the game by recording the final two outs without allowing a run.
St. Thomas starter Riley Bosch gave up three runs in two innings to get the loss for the Tommies.
Minnesota got its scoring started early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning to go up 2-0. Matt Fornasiere (Maple Grove, Minn.) led off the inning with a single. Luke MacLean (Bloomington, Minn.) followed with a base hit, and Mike Mee (Richfield, Minn.) walked to load the bases with no one out. Andy Hunter (West St. Paul, Minn.) brought home the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to score Fornasiere to make it 1-0. Kevin Carlson (Edina, Minn.) walked to load the bases again, to set up a sacrifice fly by Jeff DeSmidt (Mahtomedi, Minn.) to make it 2-0.
The Golden Gophers added a single run in the bottom of the second to make it 3-0. Sean Kommerstad (Minnetonka, Minn.) walked with one out, and stole second. He moved up to third on fly out to right field, and came around to score on a MacLean RBI bunt single to make it 3-0.
Minnesota put up a pair of runs again in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead. With one out, Mee singled up the middle, and moved to second on a Hunter walk. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, and came home to score when Hrncirik singled both runners home.
The Golden Gophers added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on a Tony Leseman double that brought home Hrncirik and Jeremy Chlan (Apple Valley, Minn.) to make the score 7-0. Minnesota added single runs in the seventh and eighth to go up 9-0. Hunter had a fielder’s choice RBI in the seventh, and Joe Maciej (Elk River, Minn.) had an RBI groundout in the eighth.
St. Thomas added a single run in the ninth for the final deficit of 9-1.
Minnesota’s offense was led by Hrncirik who went two-for-four with one run, two RBI and two stolen bases. Hrncirik has now recorded 13 stolen bases in the first 18 games of the season. MacLean was also two-for-three with one RBI, two runs and a stolen base.
Hunter and Leseman each had two RBI in the game. Chlan also had two stolen bases in the game.
Minnesota finished the game with a season-high six stolen bases.
St. Thomas was led by Eric Bloom who was two-for-three on the night.
The Golden Gophers will host Michigan at the Metrodome on Friday, Apr. 1 at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Apr. 2 in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. and Sunday, Apr. 3 at 1 p.m. in a single game.
