WTN: Second-Ranked Northwestern Blanks Minnesota 7-0

Northwestern took the early 1-0 lead with a 3-0 doubles mark. The Wildcats have won their last 21 doubles matches, while posting a perfect 21-0 mark in Big Ten play. After two quick NU wins at Nos. 1 and 3, Minnesota nearly pulled off a major upset at No. 2, but 36th-ranked Alexis Prousis and Kristi Roemer downed Jane Anderson and Ida Malmberg, 8-7 (4). The Wildcat duo shot out to a 5-1 lead, but Minnesota won the next four to tie it at 5-5. NU broke the Golden Gophers in the next game to retake the lead and extend it to 7-5. But Minnesota won the next two games to tie it back up 7-7. With the tiebreak at 6 -4, Prousis ended the match with a cross-court shot.
In singles action, Northwestern went a perfect 6-0 with only one match going to three sets. At No. 4, former Golden Gopher Valerie Vladea gained the first singles win for NU, downing Anderson, 6-2, 6-2. After two quick wins at Nos. 2 and 3, third-ranked Audra Cohen fell behind early in both sets to No. 70 Nischela Reddy at No. 1, but rallied to win 6-3, 6-3. With the loss, Reddy fell to 9-7 this spring and 3-3 in the Big Ten.
In the final match of the afternoon, Danielle Mousseau claimed the first set over Andrea Yung at No. 5, 6-2, but Yung won the second in a tiebreak, 7-6.In the third-set tiebreak, Yung improved her dual mark to 7-0 on the strength of a 10-5 win.
The Maroon and Gold returns home next weekend for a two-match homestand against Indiana and Purdue on April 15 and 17 at the Baseline Tennis Center.
