“This year's group is filled with fresh new faces. These ten young ladies represent the future of women's basketball,” said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. “Considering the overwhelming field of talent at this level of the game, the Kodak/WBCA All-America Team Selection Committee has done an excellent job choosing another class of All-Americans.”
Following is the 2005 WBCA/Kodak All-America Team:
Seimone Augustus (G, 6-1, Jr.) LSU
Jacqueline Batteast (F, 6-2, Sr.) Notre Dame
Monique Currie (G/F, 6-0, Jr.) Duke
Jessica Davenport (C, 6-5, So.) Ohio State
Sandora Irvin (F, 6-3, Sr.) TCU
Janel McCarville (C, 6-2, Sr.) Minnesota
Kendra Wecker (F, 5-11, Sr.) Kansas State
Tan White (G, 5-7, Sr.) Mississippi State
Candice Wiggins (G, 5-11, Fr.) Stanford
Sophia Young (F, 6-1, Jr.) Baylor
After McCarville and Augustus were two of only three non-seniors on the honor squad in 2004, the 2005 10-member team is split evenly with five seniors and five underclassmen. McCarville and Ohio State sophomore Jessica Davenport represented the Big Ten Conference. Michigan State’s Liz Shimek and Penn State’s Jess Strom and Tanisha Wright were named WBCA/Kodak Honorable Mention All-Americans.
Augustus was awarded the State Farm Wade Trophy as the WBCA national player of the year. Stanford’s Candice Wiggins became just the ninth freshmen selected as a WBCA/Kodak All-American.
McCarville and Lindsay Whalen are the only players in Golden Gopher history to garner WBCA/Kodak All-America honors twice in a career. Overall, McCarville is one of eight All-Americans in Minnesota women’s basketball history.
