MGYM: Alvarez and Mortimer Named ESPN Academic All-District

Mortimer capped an amazing career in 2005 by earning four All-America citations at the NCAA Championships, bringing his career All-America certificate total to 13. A physics major, Mortimer carries a 3.43 grade point average. He placed third in the 500 free, fourth in the 400 IM and eighth in the 1650 free at the 2005 NCAA meet. He was also the 2005 Big Ten runner-up in the 500 and 1650 free. He was recently selected to represent the United States at the 2005 World University Games in Turkey after placing in the top five in five events at the World Championships Trials. A four-time U.S. National champion, Mortimer is also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten recipient and a two-time College Swimming Coaches Association Academic All-American.
Alvarez capped an outstanding career by earning the Nissen-Emery Award as the nation's top senior gymnast. He was a 2005 All-American on the pommel horse, vault and in the all- around. Alvarez was also the 2005 Big Ten champion on the vault and took third in the all-around. An All-American and All-Big Ten athlete in each of his four years, he recently qualified for the 2005 U.S. Senior National Team. A psychology major, he carries a 3.84 grade point average.
Eleven male and 11 female athletes were selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All- District V at-large first team. To be considered for the award, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic standing, own a grade-point average of 3.2 and must be a starter or key reserve for their team. All first-team selections from each of the eight districts are now eligible for Academic All-America honors. Sports information directors nominate eligible athletes from their schools who are named to district teams prior to being voted upon on the national level. CoSIDA has been selecting Academic All-America teams since 1952.
CoSIDA's District V encompasses Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Iowa. Eligible at-large sports include golf, gymnastics, hockey, swimming, wrestling and tennis.
