FB: Gopher Football Team Announces 2005 Team Captains

safeUniversity of Minnesota senior center Greg Eslinger, senior defensive tackle Anthony Montgomery, senior safety John Pawielski and senior guard Mark Setterstrom have been named team captains for the Gopher football team for the 2005 season.

Eslinger, a 2004 Rimington Trophy finalist, was named to the 2004 FWAA All-America Team and was selected to the 2004 SI.com All-America Team. A two-time first-team All- Big Ten selection by the coaches and the media, Eslinger is only the third Gopher since 1963 to be named first-team all-league by both the coaches and the media in consecutive seasons. Setterstrom was a first-team All-Big Ten performer in 2004 and was an All- America selection by Rivals.

Last season, Eslinger and Setterstrom started all 12 games and helped the Gophers average 438.3 yards of total offense, which ranked third-best in the Big Ten, 15th in the nation and is the second-highest average in school history. They also aided Minnesota in averaging 256.8 rushing yards per game, which led the Big Ten, ranked fifth nationally and represents the second-highest average in school history.

Montgomery has started 19 of his 33 career games and has 19 career tackles-for-loss. Last season, Montgomery started all 12 games and had 48 tackles, including nine tackles- for-loss and three sacks.

Pawielski, a former walk-on, has 109 career tackles with two tackles-for-loss, one interception and four passes defensed. He started 10 games in 2004 and ranked fifth in the team in tackles with 70, including 45 solo stops.

The Gophers open their season, Thursday, Sept. 1 at Tulsa. Game time is 9:15 p.m. CST and will be shown on ESPN2. Minnesota returns home for a Sept. 10 game on ESPN2 against Colorado State at 1 p.m.
