WGM: Four Gopher Gymnasts Earn Scholastic All-America Honors

Maria Opsahl served as a team captain as a junior in 2005, and earned her first Scholastic All-America citation. Opsahl competed on the vault and bars in every meet in 2005, earning a career-high of 9.775 on the vault and a career-best 9.850 on the bars during her junior year. Opsahl competed on the floor in 12 of 13 competitions during the 2005 season, earning a season-high score of 9.875. Opsahl placed among the top three on floor in four meets during her junior season. She is a three-time letterwinner, and a two- time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. Opsahl is pursuing a degree in elementary education, and carries a 3.87 GPA.
Kelly Stout competed as a vault specialist in the 2004 and 2005 seasons and has a career- high score of 9.725. During her junior season in 2005, Stout earned a season-best score of 9.625 at Iowa State. She was the recipient of the Mariam Award in 2005, a team honor given to the gymnast who best embodies the qualities of former Gopher gymnast Mariam Pourshoushtari, fully dedicating herself to becoming the best she can be. Stout is a three- time letterwinner, and has earned Academic All-Big Ten acclaim twice. She was also a NACGC/W Scholastic All-American as a sophomore in 2004. Stout is majoring in history and political science, and has earned a 3.84 GPA.
Angela Walker was an all-around competitor for the Golden Gophers as a freshman in 2005, until her season was cut short by injury. Walker competed as an all arounder in two of the first three meets of the 2005 campaign, earning her best score of 38.825 at home against Iowa State. In the season opener, she tallied a 9.800 on the vault to tie for first place in the event. Walker was injured during her beam performance at Washington, and missed the remainder of the season. She is pursuing a degree in neuroscience, and earned a 3.84 GPA in her first year.
Amanda Miles competed on the beam at every meet during her freshman season in 2005. She earned her season-best score of 9.800 twice. Miles was inserted into the lineup on bars at one meet, and earned an 8.800. She earned her first varsity letter in 2005. Miles has a 3.61 GPA after her first year, and is majoring in psychology.
