VB: Minnesota Defeats Alumni Team in Three Games

Minnesota was led by senior Jessica Byrnes (Minnetonka, Minn.) who had 15 kills on the night. Junior Kelly Bowman (Maple Grove, Minn.) had 11 kills, nine digs and two service aces on the night for the Golden Gophers, while freshman Katie Vatterrodt (Bloomington, Ill.) tallied 10 kills.

Junior Malama Peniata (Plymouth, Minn.) had a team-high 25 digs and five kills. Freshman setter Rachel Hartmann (St. Charles, Ill.) finished with 12 digs and a team-high three service aces. Senior Paula Gentil (Forteleaza Ceara’, Brazil) also had 13 digs and two service aces.

Jessy Jones tallied eight kills on the night for Minnesota, while sophomore transfer Sarah Florian (Holland, Ohio) came in the last game, and had six kills and nine digs.

Minnesota will open up its season on Friday, Sept. 2 when it takes on North Dakota State in the Diet Coke Classic at 7:30 p.m. The Golden Gophers will also face Central Florida on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 12:30 p.m. and Xavier at 7:30 p.m. in the final match of the tournament.

The Golden Gophers will turn around after that tournament and host No. 1 Nebraska on Monday, Sept. 5 at 1 p.m.
