VB: Minnesota Defeats Campbell in Three Games at TCU Tournament

The fifth-ranked Minnesota volleyball team (8-1) set a new rally- scoring record for team hitting percentage at .527 (45-6-74), as the Golden Gophers defeated Campbell (5-7) in three games by scores of 30- 10, 30-18, 30-18 in the TCU Tournament at the University Rec Center on Friday, Sept. 16.

Senior libero Paula Gentil (Forteleaza Ceara’, Brazil) also broke a school-record for the most service aces in rally-scoring match with eight. Gentil had three service aces in both the first and second game, and two in the third game. Gentil also had 14 digs and three assists in the match.

Junior Meredith Nelson (St. Croix Falls, Wis.) led the way with nine kills, as she hit .900 (9-0-10) for the match. Nelson also had four blocks on the night. Jessy Jones (Naperville, Ill.) and Kyla Roehrig (Papillion, Neb.) each had eight kills on the match. Roehrig also had four blocks for the match.

Sarah Florian (Holland, Ohio) also finished with five kills and hit .500 (5-0-10) in just her second match for Minnesota. Jessica Byrnes (Minnetonka, Minn.) also had five kills for the Golden Gophers.

In the first game, the two teams were tied at 2-2 before the Golden Gophers scored six straight points to take an 8-2 lead. Campbell cut the Minnesota lead down to 14-9. The Golden Gophers proceeded to score 14 straight points to take a 28-9 lead. Campbell finally broke the run to make it 28-10, but Minnesota scored the final two points to finish the game with 16 of the final 17 points.

Minnesota outhit Campbell .455 to -.174 in the game. The Golden Gophers limited the Camels to just three kills, while Minnesota had 12. Jones and Nelson each had three kills in the game, while Gentil had three service aces.

The Golden Gophers jumped out to a 10-8 lead in game two, and extended it to 17-10 with seven of the next nine points. With the score at 19-13, Minnesota rattled off four of the next five points to go up 23-14. Campbell scored four of the next five points to cut it to 24-18, before the Golden Gophers ripped off the final six points to win game two 30-18.

Minnesota outhit Campbell .522 to -.074 in game two. The Golden Gophers also had 14 kills to seven for the Camels. Freshman Roehrig had four kills in the game, while Gentil had three service aces.

In game three, Minesota hit .586 (19-2-29) to Campbell’s .143 hitting percentage. The Golden Gophers also had 19 kills to just 10 for the Camels. With the score at 29-18, redshirt freshman Doneila Jackson (Plant City, Fla.) delivered a kill to give Minnesota the match.

It marked the second time this season that the Golden Gophers held an opponent to a negative hitting percentage, as Campbell hit -.026. Minnesota had just six errors, delivered 45 kills and had eight service aces. The Golden Gophers also outblocked the Camels 9.0-to- 1.0.

Minnesota will continue action in the TCU Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 17 when it plays Maine at 10:30 a.m. The Golden Gophers will wrap up their tournament schedule against TCU at 7 p.m.
