WTN: Minnesota Completes Day One at Bronco Invitational

In Flight A singles, junior Ida Malmberg began her season with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win over Ball State's Haly Claderwood in the first round. Picking up her first win as a Golden Gopher, Mariana Spilca dispatched Alba Berdala of Indiana, 6-0, 6-1 - also in the first round of Flight A. Sophomore Marina Bugaenco fell in a tight three-set match in her Flight A opener, falling, 3-6, 6-3, (10-6) to Indiana's Marah Calvo. Bugaenco continues play in the consolation bracket, while Malmberg and Spilca advance to the quarterfinals.
The Maroon and Gold went 0-2 in Flight B singles play with Jenna Tellefsen falling 6-2, 6 -1 to Katie Owens of Ball State, and Shelby Rohrer losing to Western Michigan's Malena Remnyse, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles play, Minnesota competed in matches against Illinois-Chicago and Western Michigan. Versus UIC, the Golden Gophers went 2-1 with Malmberg and senior captain Nischela Reddy overwhelming Iris Jaklin and Callan Smith, 8-2, and Bugaenco and Spilca earning their first win as a duo with an 8-6 win over Corey Steven and Christina Oum. Reddy and Malmberg picked up UM's lone win in the matches vs. WMU, edging Remnyse and Noriko Saruta, 8-6, to improve to 2-0 on the day.
