BYU Upsets Top-Ranked Wisconsin For Griak Men’s Gold Title

Fifth-ranked BYU won its first Griak Men’s Gold Race title upsetting the nation’s No. ranked team Wisconsin in the process. The Cougars scored 117 points to capture the win, followed by Wisconsin with 151 and Iowa in third with 157. Minnesota placed seventh with 232 team points.

The defending national champion, Wisconsin senior Simon Bairu, added a Griak crown to his collection, covering the 8-kilometer course in a time of 23 minutes, 43 seconds. Kansas junior Benson Chesang finished second in 24:05.

The Cougars were paced by junior Josh Rohatinsky, who placed third in a time of 24:06, and sophomore Chandler Goodwin, who finished 16th in 24:44.

Senior Ryan Malmin topped the Minnesota finishers, posting a time of 24:55. Freshman Chris Rombough and sophomore Justin Grunewald both were clocked at 25:00 among a group of four runners crossing the finish line at the same time. Rombough was awarded 28th place, while Grunewald was 31st. The Gophers were running without a pair of all-region performers as Erik Grumstrup and Antonio Vega missed the meet due to injuries.

“We ran a decent race today but we still have plenty of work to do,” said Minnesota head coach Steve Plasencia. “Our top five did a good job but then a sixth-place runner was no where to be found.”

Other scoring Gophers were David VanOrsdel in 59th place (25:24) and Ben Puhl in 90th (25:49).

Minnesota’s next competition is October 15, when the Gophers will run at the Pre-NCAA Meet and the Jim Drews Invitational.
