Gophers Fall in Overtime to Ohio State, 3-2

Both teams went scoreless in the first 20 minutes of action. OSU outshot the Gophers, 8-6. Minnesota got on the board first when Jenelle Philipczyk scored an even- strength goal at 6:45 of the second period. Gigi Marvin picked up the puck off of the boards and skated near the goal. She passed it to Philipczyk as she put the puck past OSU’s goalie Liana Bonanno. It was Philipczyk’s fifth goal in four games. The Gophers added their second goal of the period at 18:17 of the second period, this time on a power-play attempt. Allie Sanchez tipped in an Anya Miller shot from the point. Sanchez, who had not scored a goal this season, tallied her second goal in two games. Erica McKenzie was credited with the second assist.
The Buckeyes responded with a goal of their own at 18:59 of the second period, cutting the Gophers lead to 2-1. Jana Harrigan caught a pass from Katie Maroney. Harrigan crashed towards the net through the slot, but was defended all the way to the net. The puck slide off her stick into the net as she and the Minnesota player ran into Gopher goalie Brittony Chartier simultaneously. It was Chartier’s first allowed goal since Dec. 10, when she allowed one goal to Minnesota State in the 1-1 overtime tie. Chartier went 216.17 without allowing a goal. She held back-to-back shutouts against St. Cloud State, Jan. 14 and against Minnesota Duluth, 2-0 Jan. 21.
OSU tied the game as it scored a power-play goal at 11:05 of the third period. Maroney scored on a back-door attempt as she was set up by Harrigan and Shelby Aldous. With the Maroney goal, the two teams went into overtime. Minnesota was outshot, 11-6 in the third stanza.
With just :50 into the overtime period, Erin Keys scored the game- winning goal. It was the second overtime win against the Gophers this season. The first dated back to Nov. 5 when the Buckeyes won, 2-1 in Ridder Arena.
Minnesota will look to get back in the win column next weekend against Minnesota State, Feb. 3-4. Friday’s game will be played at 7 p.m. at Ridder Arena. Saturday’s game will be played at 4 p.m. in Mariucci Arena.
