The Gophers took early control of the game when Gigi Marvin scored an even-strength goal at 5:05 of the first period. Bobbi Ross started the play, passing the puck to Erica McKenzie. McKenzie found Marvin of the opposite side of the goal and passed the puck cross ice. Marvin lifted the puck, top-shelf, for her fifth goal of the season and second in two games.
However, the Beavers responded with two goals in the second period and took home the win. Jessica Pullar scored two power-play goals at 5:08 and 19:34 for her fourth and fifth goals of the season.
Minnesota had opportunities in the third, but could not convert. The Gophers pulled goalie Kim Hanlon with 1:04 remaining in the game, but could not score with the extra attacker.
Beaver goalie Emily Brookshaw had a stellar night in goal. She had seven saves in the first, 14 saves in the second and seven saves in the third for the win. It was her second win of the year. Hanlon had 13 saves and suffered her first loss of the season, now sitting at 4-1-0.
The Gophers will compete in a home-and-home series against St. Cloud State, next weekend. Friday's game will be at 7:07 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. Saturday's game will be at 4:07 p.m. At Ridder Arena. It is the first time the Gophers will face the Huskies this season. Brittony Chartier and Melanie Gagnon will return with the Gophers next weekend. The duo were out of action this weekend competing with the Canadian Under-22 Team in Germany.
