Minnesota Struggles in Qualifying Play at ITA Midwest Regional

The University of Minnesota women's tennis team struggled in the opening day of the 2006 ITA Midwest Region Championships today in East Lansing, Mich., going 4-5 in qualifying singles action. The Golden Gophers failed to advance any players out of the round of 32 in the qualifying draw.
Minnesota opened the day on a strong note with a 4-1 record in the round of 64. Lindsay Risebrough cruised through the first round with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Toledo's Martina Wodzinski before falling 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 to Ashley Moccia of Western Michigan. Mariana Spilca also posted a straight-set victory in the first round – over Michelle Hawes of Butler – but dropped a 6-7, 6-3, 6-0 match to Golda Rubina of Chicago State in the round of 32.
Alex Seaton routed Milica Zivanovic of Western Michigam 6-1, 6-0, but saw Erin Clark of Indiana post a 6-4, 6-3 win in the second round. Karina Chiarelli took a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Bowling Green's San Kintzel before a 6-3, 6-0 loss to Michigan State's Pascale Schnitzer. The lone Golden Gopher to lose in the first round, Danielle Mousseau fell 6-4 6-4 to Merel Beelen of Iowa.
The Maroon and Gold will now turn to Tijana Koprivica, Ida Malmberg and Ashley Schellhas in the main draw of singles play and four duos in the main draw of doubles. The singles main draw begins Saturday.
